Stretch marks

Stretch marks are skin atrophies in the form of whitish lines located in the connective tissue. They appear when the skin is stretched or gives much of itself due to rapid growth.

Clinical picture

Despite the fact that the skin is usually elastic, when it is stretched excessively, the normal production of collagen (the main protein in charge of manufacturing the connective tissue of the skin) is altered. Consequently, fine scars called stretch marks can form.

They are preferably located on the abdominal wall, buttocks, legs, arms and breasts. The stria color is initially on board and in its final stage it is pearly white.

Types of stretch marks

There are two types of stretch marks:
• Bloating stretch marks: they are seen in pregnant women, in patients who have lost weight drastically.
• Purple or dark purple or purple streaks that are a characteristic sign of Cushing's syndrome due to excessive production of cortisol (hypercortisolism). They can also be created by prolonged consumption of pharmaceutical corticosteroids.

 Causes

From a physiological point of view, stretch marks are caused by stretching of the middle and inner layers of the skin due to pregnancy, puberty and rapid growth, or also by sudden increase or decrease in weight.

Stretch marks can also appear when a person uses steroid-containing skin creams or lotions, or has to take high doses of corticosteroids for prolonged periods.
