Where is the house dust mite found?

The dust mite thrives in poorly ventilated and damp houses. However, it can be found even in the cleanest house: in carpets and curtains and in the seams of mattresses.

The dust mite can be found in high concentrations in pillows and duvets, especially when they are made of wool, cotton, and man-made fibers.

How can you reduce the number of house dust mites?

  • If sleeping in a bunk bed, a child prone to allergies is best on the top mattress.
  • Wash and dry sheets every week. Wash bedding in hot water (>54 C) or use a dust mite control Laundry additive.
  • Get special mite-resistant covers for pillows, mattresses, and duvets.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter. Vacuum all carpets weekly, especially in bedrooms and under beds. If you can, choose vinyl or polished wood flooring instead of carpet, as it tends to collect less dust. Vacuum upholstery and curtains, and don't forget the mattress and blankets.
  • Use a wet duster to do the cleaning, as it is much better at picking up dust than a dry one.
  • Wash curtains regularly. There is less dust when curtains are made of lightweight materials. They should also be vacuumed frequently and washed regularly (perhaps six times a week).
  • Hang clothes in closets. Make sure the closet is well ventilated, or consider a chemical moisture eliminator such as anhydrous calcium chloride flakes.
  • Dehumidifiers can reduce the amount of house dust Mites, since they prefer a humid environment.
  • Put soft toys in the freezer for a few hours to destroy mites.
