<\/span><\/h2>\nAn inflammatory linear warty epidermal nevus (ILVEN) is a special type of epidermal nevus. Epidermal naevi<\/span> are birthmarks due to excessive growth of the epidermis<\/span> (upper layers of the skin).<\/p>\n<\/span>What Causes ILVEN?<\/span><\/h2>\nThe abnormality that results in ILVEN arises from a defect in the ectoderm. This is the outer layer of the embryo that gives rise to the epidermis and neural tissue. The defect that causes skin lesions can also cause disorders of other internal organs such as the brain, eyes and skeleton. This is extremely rare with ILVEN.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Who gets ILVEN?<\/span><\/h2>\nILVEN can be present at birth, but it usually arises during the first 5 years of life and lasts for months or years. It is somewhat more common in women than in men and occurs in all races.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/span>What are the clinical features of ILVEN?<\/span><\/h2>\nLike other linear epidermal nevi, ILVEN is characterized by warty<\/span> lesions that tend to cluster in a linear pattern. The difference is that the lesions are red, swollen, and itchy, sometimes intensely. The surface of the lesions can be seen as eczema<\/span> (dry, red, streaky) or as psoriasis (red and scaly<\/span>)<\/p>\nILVEN most often affects one leg and can spread from the buttock to the foot. <\/p>\n\n<\/span>ILVEN<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

<\/span>What is the treatment of ILVEN?<\/span><\/h2>\nThere is no curative treatment available for ILVEN. Emollients<\/span> and low power current<\/span> Steroids can relieve itching.
