<\/span>What is keratoacanthoma?<\/span><\/h2>\nKeratoacanthoma is a skin. injury<\/span> that erupts on sun-damaged skin, rather like a small volcano. It grows for a few months; then it may shrink and resolve itself. Keratoacanthoma is considered a variant of keratinocytes<\/span> or notmelanoma<\/span> skin Cancer<\/span>, scaly<\/span> cell carcinoma<\/span> (SCC) Because it cannot be reliably distinguished clinically from more severe forms of skin cancer, keratoacanthomas are usually treated surgically.<\/p>\nKeratoacanthoma may begin at the site of a minor injury to sun damage and hair<\/span>-bearing skin. At first, it may appear as a small grain or boil and may be squeezed, but it is found to have a solid<\/span> core full of curb<\/span> (scale<\/span>) It then proliferates, and can be up to 2 cm in diameter by the time you tell your doctor.<\/p>\n\n<\/span>Keratoacanthoma<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

<\/span>What causes keratoacanthoma?<\/span><\/h2>\nKeratoacanthoma arises from the hair. follicle<\/span> skin cells for unknown reasons.<\/p>\nSome keratoacanthomas appear to be related to infection<\/span> with human papillomavirus (HPV), the cause of warts, but most keratoacanthomas are not due to HPV.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
<\/span>What is the treatment for keratoacanthoma?<\/span><\/h2>\nKeratoacanthomas must be treated for several reasons.<\/p>\n
\n- To get pathology<\/span>: Keratoacanthoma may be difficult to distinguish from invader<\/span> squamous cell carcinoma.<\/li>\n
- To get rid of an ugly, tender or worrying injury<\/li>\n
- To minimize the scar<\/span>, which can be more unpleasant if the injury resolves on its own.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Treatment requires destruction of the lesion. Options include:<\/p>\n
\n- \nCryotherapy<\/span> (used only for small injuries <0.5 cm)<\/li>\n
- \n
curettage and cauterization<\/span> or other form of electrosurgery\n<\/li>\n- Excision<\/span><\/li>\n
- \nRadiotherapy<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
<\/span>Keratoacanthoma follow-up<\/span><\/h2>\nIf keratoacanthoma comes back, it must be treated again.<\/p>\n
Patients with keratoacanthomas are at risk for similar lesions and other types of skin cancer.<\/p>\n
<\/span>Multiple keratoacanthomas<\/span><\/h2>\nThere are some rare conditions in which multiple keratoacanthomas appear. These are:<\/p>\n
\n- Grzybowski's eruptive keratoacanthomas<\/li>\n
- Muir Tower syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n
- Multiple self-healing scaly epitheliomas<\/span> by Ferguson-Smith<\/li>\n
- Centrifugal keratoacanthoma marginatum<\/li>\n
- Drug-induced eruptive keratoacanthomas<\/li>\n
\n- The responsible medications include BRAF<\/span> inhibitors vemurafenib and dabrafenib, checkpoint inhibitors pembrolizumab and nivolumab, leflunomide, vismodegib, imiquimod.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n
Treatment requires surgery, as well as oral medications such as acitretin, methotrexate, or cyclophosphamide.
