It occurs most frequently on the scalp (tinea capitis), but can also arise anywhere exposed to the fungus, such as the face (tinea faciei) and upper extremities (tinea corporis). It is often misdiagnosed as <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"937\">bacterial<\/span> infection.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-se-ve-un-kerion\"><\/span>What does a kerion look like?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A kerion presents as a pus-filled lump, often several centimeters in diameter. It is characterized by marking <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"148\">inflammation<\/span>. The hairs within the kerion are loose and fall out, often resulting in a bald area (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"324\">located<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"824\">alopecia<\/span>)<\/p>\n<p>Regional expansion <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1775\">lymph nodes<\/span> can occur, and some people become systemically ill with fever and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1211\">discomfort<\/span>. The most common fungi found on kerion are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Microsporum canis<\/li>\n<li>Trichophyton tonsurans<\/li>\n<li>Trichophyton verrucosum<\/li>\n<li>Trichophyton mentagrophytes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Trichophyton rubrum is not a common cause of kerion.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-se-diagnostica-el-kerion\"><\/span>How is kerion diagnosed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Suspicion is increased due to the typical appearance of a kerion. Exam using a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"304\">Wooden lamp<\/span> Long wavelength UVA emission may reveal yellow-green fluorescence if the kerion is due to Microsporum canis, but is often negative even when this is responsible. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"882\">organism<\/span> because inflammation obscures the presence of the fungus.<\/p>\n<p>To confirm the diagnosis, scrapings and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"122\">hair<\/span> Samples can be taken from the affected area to <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"867\">microscopy<\/span> and mushrooms <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"837\">culture<\/span> (laboratory tests for fungal infection). A bacterial swab should be considered a secondary infection with <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"935\">bacteria<\/span> It is common.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFKerion-es-contagioso\"><\/span>Is Kerion contagious?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Yes, fungal infection can be transmitted by kerion to other household members if they are in close contact, especially if they share bedding and towels. Combs and hair brushes should be disinfected or discarded to prevent the transmission of infection or reinfection.<\/p>\n<p>Since the fungus that causes kerion (for example, M canis) often resides in a home <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"796\">pet<\/span> (e.g. kitten), family members can also become infected through direct contact with the animal.<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCual-es-el-tratamiento-de-kerion\"><\/span>What is the treatment of kerion?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Kerion should be treated with oral antifungal agents. A 6-8 week course of treatment is usually prescribed as a minimum. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1330\">Current<\/span> antifungal agents are not effective due to deep fungal invasion into the hair <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1300\">follicle<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Terbinafine<\/li>\n<li>Itraconazole<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Griseofulvin (no longer available in New Zealand)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Antibiotics may be needed if bacterial infection is present. Antifungal shampoos containing ketoconazole orciclopirox help reduce the risk of spreading the infection to others.<\/p>\n<p>Hair usually grows back after the infection is treated, but sometimes hair loss is permanent, especially if the infection has been prolonged.<\/p>\n<\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00bfQu\u00e9 es un kerion?
