The organism&#039;s life cycle contains a flagellated phase (promastigote) while it lives within the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"713\">vector<\/span>, and a phase when the flagellum retracts (amastigote), which is the stage seen in humans <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"145\">infection<\/span> and visualized in tissue sections or smear preparations.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Histologia-de-leishmaniasis\"><\/span>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"128\">Histology<\/span> leishmaniasis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are three basic types of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"47\">cutaneous<\/span> leishmaniasis: cutaneous leishmaniasis (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"349\">acute<\/span> and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"319\">chronic<\/span>), <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1019\">mucocutaneous<\/span> leishmaniasis and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"67\">disseminated<\/span> Anergic cutaneous leishmaniasis.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the clinical type and stage, in leishmaniasis, the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"85\">epidermis<\/span> can ulcerate with marked secondary changes and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"846\">epidermal<\/span> reaction, or alternatively, the epidermis can be quite inconspicuous and overlap with dense <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"52\">dermal<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"541\">infiltrate<\/span> (Figure 1). The infiltrate is typically dense and contains predominantly <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"858\">histiocytes<\/span>, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"421\">lymphocytes<\/span> and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1513\">plasma<\/span> cells (figure 2). Other acute inflammatory cells are generally difficult to find unless there is <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1278\">ulceration<\/span> and minor changes. Smears of skin or other organs can also demonstrate the body with Giemsa staining. In difficult cases, or for precise characterization of organisms <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1851\">molecular<\/span> techniques like <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"941\">Polymerase chain reaction<\/span> (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"942\">PCR<\/span>) It can be applied.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diagnostico-diferencial-de-leishmaniasis-patologia\"><\/span>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"813\">Differential diagnosis<\/span> leishmaniasis <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"223\">pathology<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Histoplasmosis: Organisms are similar in size to Leishmania, but easily stain with silver spots, show narrow-based shoots and a halo of microorganisms.<\/p>\n<p>Granulomatous disease: The later or granulomatous stages of leishmaniasis may resemble sarcoidosis or other granulomatous diseases.
