It is also called nodular<\/span> chondrodermatitis, chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis and chondrodermatitis <\/span>nodularis <\/span>chronicle <\/span>helicis<\/p>\n<\/span>Who gets chondrodermatitis nodularis?<\/span><\/h2>\nChondrodermatitis <\/span>nodularis occurs more frequently in older fair-skinned, middle-aged men, with 10 to 35% of reported cases in women. <\/span>What causes nodular chondrodermatitis?<\/span><\/h2>\nThe exact cause of chondrodermatitis <\/span>nodularis is still unknown. There are several factors that contribute to its development.<\/p>\n\n- Repeated pressure and compromised blood supply to the ear (predominantly in people who sleep on one side)<\/li>\n
- Exposure to cold and sun.<\/li>\n

<\/span>What are the clinical features of nodular chondrodermatitis? <\/span><\/h2>\nChondrodermatitis <\/span>nodularis is a solitary, firm and oval-shaped nodule<\/span>, 4\u20136 mm in diameter, with center Cortex<\/span> and surroundings erythema<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n- In men, the most common site for CNH is the helix, while in women it is most often found in the anthelix. <\/li>\n
- It is typically unilateral<\/span>, located on the sleeping side, but can be bilateral<\/span>.<\/li>\n
- CNH is painful and tender. Night pain can prevent sleeping on the affected side.<\/li>\n

\n- Scaly<\/span> cell carcinoma<\/span><\/li>\n
- Keratoacanthoma<\/li>\n
- Viral wart<\/li>\n
- Gouty tophus<\/li>\n
- Calcinosis skin<\/span><\/li>\n
- Basal<\/span> cell carcinoma<\/li>\n
- \nActinic keratosis<\/span><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
<\/span>What is the treatment for nodular chondrodermatitis?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/span>General measures<\/span><\/h3>\nProtective padding at night can relieve pressure on the CNH affected area.<\/p>\n
\n- Try to avoid sleeping on one side only.<\/li>\n
- Select a soft pillow.<\/li>\n
- Consider designing a "hole" in the pillow to avoid pressure on the painful area.<\/li>\n
- You can use rubber foam or a bath sponge to make a cchondrodermatitis <\/span>Nodularis hearing protector to wear at night, held in place with an elastic headband (or buy a hearing protector from a medical supply company).<\/li>\n
- Wear a warm hat over your ears when you're out in the cold and wind.<\/li>\n
- Apply petroleum jelly or an antiseptic ointment<\/span> under a light dressing, especially if the chondrodermatitis <\/span>nodularis is ulcerated or infected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
<\/span>Intralesional steroid injection<\/span><\/h3>\nA triamcinolone acetonide steroid injection can reduce locally inflammation<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/span>Implant<\/span><\/h3>\nA filler like collagen<\/span> Or hyaluronic acid can be injected under the skin over the cartilage to provide a cushioning layer.<\/p>\n<\/span>\nCurrent<\/span> nitroglycerine<\/span><\/h3>\nNitroglycerin ointment (containing 1\u20132% glyceryl trinitrate) causes relaxation and vasodilation<\/span> of arteriolar smooth muscle and can reverse the ischemic<\/span> changes observed in nodular chondrodermatitis.<\/p>\n\n- Apply twice a day to the affected area.<\/li>\n
- Side effects include transient headache and skin irritation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
<\/span>Surgery <\/span><\/h3>\nSurgical options may include:<\/p>\n
\n- Removal of skin and cartilage with minimal margins.<\/li>\n
- Excision by puncture biopsy<\/span>, with full-thickness skin graft\n<\/li>\n
- Curettage to remove the affected tissue, which is allowed to heal by second intention. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
