It has been used mainly in the treatment of gout. Although not formally indicated or approved for the treatment of dermatological conditions, colchicine has been prescribed for some skin conditions with good results. Its effectiveness is due to several <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"464\">immune <\/span>and anti<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"490\">inflammatory<\/span> properties.<\/p>\n<p>In New Zealand, colchicine is available as 0.5 mg (or 500 microgram) tablets (previously 0.6 mg).<\/p>\n<p>For its potential <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1160\">toxicity<\/span>, colchicine is used as a second-line agent when safer medications have not been successful.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Colchicina-para-enfermedades-dermatologicas\"><\/span>Colchicine for dermatological diseases.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Colchicine is used for some dermatological diseases. Colchicine treatment should be stopped immediately when abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting occurs. These are the first signs of toxicity and usually occur between 0 and 24 hours after taking the drug.<\/p>\n<p>If you are taking other medications, particularly antibiotics and pain relievers, do not take colchicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist that it is safe to do so.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Efectos-secundarios-de-la-colchicina\"><\/span>Colchicine Side Effects.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The most common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting, which occur in up to 80% of patients receiving a maximum dose. Gastrointestinal symptoms are worse with higher doses. These symptoms indicate toxicity and the drug should be discontinued.<\/p>\n<p>Toxicity results in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bone marrow depression resulting in agranulocytosis (absence of white blood cells) and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"623\">thrombocytopenia<\/span> (low platelet count)<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1374\">Peripheral<\/span> neuritis (nerve <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"148\">inflammation<\/span> affecting hands and feet)<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"250\">Purple<\/span> (bleeding into the skin)<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1586\">Myopathy<\/span> (weak muscles)<\/li>\n<li>waste of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"122\">hair<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>Azoospermia (absence of sperm production).<\/li>\n<li>Seizures<\/li>\n<li>Cardiac <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1133\">arrhythmia<\/span> (palpitations) and low blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Lung, kidney and liver failure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Colchicine, when used in low doses, has a low rate of side effects. The beneficial effects without the side effects are possible by reducing the dose. However, there is no antidote if you take an excessive dose.
