Naevi are sometimes called <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"346\">hamartomas<\/span>they are messy <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1824\">proliferations<\/span> of cells within the tissue of origin, and are due to developmental error.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"22\">Benign<\/span> Developmental skin lesions that develop later in life are called &quot;acquired&quot; nevi. <\/p>\n<p>Naevi can be derived from the outer layers of the skin (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"847\">epithelial<\/span> naevi) or from the deeper layers (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"52\">dermal<\/span>\/ \/<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"900\">subcutaneous<\/span> naevi). Vascular nevi are due to groups of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"953\">blood vessels<\/span>, melanocytic nevi are due to groups of pigmented skin cells (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"181\">melanocytes<\/span>), epidermal nevi to <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"917\">keratinocytes<\/span> skin cells and so on. The exact cause of why they occur is unknown, but may be related to <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"324\">located<\/span> anomalies of certain <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"775\">genes<\/span>.
