Cutaneous TB is a relatively rare form of extrapulmonary TB (TB <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"145\">infection<\/span> of other organs and tissues). Even in countries like India and China, where TB still occurs commonly, skin outbreaks are rare (<0.1%).<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tipos-de-tuberculosis-cutanea\"><\/span>Types of cutaneous tuberculosis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are several different types of cutaneous TB. Direct skin infection or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"188\">mucous<\/span> membranes from an external source of mycobacteria result in an initial <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"164\">injury<\/span> called the tubercular chancre. Cankers are firm and shallow. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1279\">ulcers<\/span> With a granular base. They appear about 2-4 weeks after the mycobacteria enter through the broken skin. The patient&#039;s immune response and the virulence of the mycobacteria determine the type and severity of skin tuberculosis.<\/p>\n<table class=\"borders\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Types of cutaneous tuberculosis<\/th>\n<th>Characteristics<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>TB verrucosa <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"48\">skin<\/span>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>Occurs after direct <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1870\">inoculation<\/span> TB on the skin in someone who has previously been infected with mycobacteria<\/li>\n<li>It appears as a purple or reddish-brown color. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"301\">warty<\/span> increase<\/li>\n<li>Injuries most often occur to the knees, elbows, hands, feet, and buttocks.<\/li>\n<li>Lesions can persist for years, but can disappear even without treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Vulgar lupus<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>Persistent and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1759\">progressive<\/span> form of cutaneous tuberculosis<\/li>\n<li>Small, well-defined, reddish-brown lesions with a jelly-like consistency (called apple jelly <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"367\">nodules<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li>Lesions persist for years, leading to disfigurement and sometimes the skin. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"30\">Cancer<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Scrofuloderma<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>Skin lesions result from the direct extension of the underlying TB infection from <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1775\">lymph nodes<\/span>, bone or joints<\/li>\n<li>Often associated with TB of the lungs<\/li>\n<li>Firm, painless lesions that eventually ulcerate with a granular base.<\/li>\n<li>It can heal even without treatment, but this takes years and leaves unsightly scars<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1694\">Miliary<\/span> tuberculosis<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"319\">Chronic<\/span> Tuberculosis infection that has spread from <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"949\">primary<\/span> infection (usually in the lungs) to other organs and tissues through the bloodstream<\/li>\n<li>Skin lesions are small red spots (about the size of a millet) that turn into ulcers and abscesses.\n<\/li>\n<li>Most likely in <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1695\">immunocompromised<\/span> patients, p. ex. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"127\">HIV<\/span>, AIDS, cancer<\/li>\n<li>The patient is generally ill.<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"241\">Forecast<\/span> is poor (many patients die even if diagnosed and treated)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Tuberculous<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"308\">Generalized<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"93\">exanthema<\/span> in patients with moderate or high immunity to tuberculosis from previous infection<\/li>\n<li>Generally in good health with no identifiable focus of active TB on the skin or elsewhere<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"90\">Erythema<\/span> induratum (Bazin&#039;s disease) occurs as recurrent nodules or lumps on the back of the legs (mainly female) that may ulcerate and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1191\">scar<\/span>. It is a kind of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"733\">nodular<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1091\">vasculitis<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>The papulonecrotic tuberculid produces cultures of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"805\">recurrent<\/span> crusted skin <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"366\">papules<\/span> on knees, elbows, buttocks, or lower trunk that heal with scars after about 6 weeks.<\/li>\n<li>Lichen scrofulosorum is an extender <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"704\">eruption<\/span> when I was little <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"107\">follicular<\/span> class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The diagnosis is usually made or confirmed by characteristics <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1419\">histopathological<\/span> features on the skin <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"24\">biopsy<\/span>. Typical tubers are caseating <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1667\">epithelioid<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1718\">granulomas<\/span> containing acid-fast bacilli.
