class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1637\">mucinosis<\/span>describes the appearance of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1636\">mucin<\/span> around <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"122\">hair<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1301\">follicles<\/span> as seen under the microscope. It is characterized by patches of bald skin in which the hair follicles are prominent. <\/p>\n<p>Mucins are seen as a clear or whitish viscous substance composed mainly of hyaluronic acid, a normal component of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"115\">soil substance<\/span> surrounding <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"39\">collagen<\/span> at <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"61\">dermis<\/span>. What is known is that mucinous material is deposited and accumulates in the hair follicles and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"262\">sebaceous<\/span> glands to create a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"490\">inflammatory<\/span> condition that subsequently breaks down the ability of the affected follicles to produce hair.<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCuales-son-las-caracteristicas-clinicas\"><\/span>What are the clinical characteristics?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Mucinous alopecia most often affects the face, neck, and scalp, but any part of the body can be affected.  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is presented as <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"116\">grouped<\/span> follicular <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"366\">papules<\/span> inside red, dry patches or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"368\">plates<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>The patches or plates are usually 2 to 5 cm in diameter, but can be larger.<\/li>\n<li>One or more injuries may be present from the start or a single one <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"164\">injury<\/span> You can develop multiple injuries in a few weeks or months.<\/li>\n<li>Hair loss does not leave scars and is potentially reversible in the early stages, but in more advanced diseases the hair follicles are destroyed, causing scarring alopecia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alopecia-mucinosa-primaria-y-aguda\"><\/span>Primary and acute mucinous alopecia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It affects people <40 a\u00f1os.<\/li>\n<li>Usually only one or a few injuries arise.<\/li>\n<li>They are often found on the head, neck, and upper arm.<\/li>\n<li>Most resolve spontaneously in 2 months to 2 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alopecia-mucinosa-primaria-y-cronica\"><\/span>Primary and chronic mucinous alopecia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It affects people&gt; 40 years.<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"309\">Extended<\/span> and often numerous injuries can persist or recur indefinitely.<\/li>\n<li>It presents as flat or raised patches that can rarely be ulcerated.<\/li>\n<li>Permanently bald patches are studded with horn plugs.<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes the mucin can be removed from the affected follicles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Urticaria-como-mucinosis-folicular\"><\/span>Urticaria-like follicular mucinosis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It presents as small itchy bumps (papules) or raised areas (plaques).<\/li>\n<li>These are mainly found on the head and neck.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alopecia-secundaria-mucinosa\"><\/span>Mucinous secondary alopecia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It affects people&gt; 40 years.<\/li>\n<li>Degeneration of the follicular mucosa can arise in inflammatory skin diseases such as lupus erythematosus and lichen simplex.<\/li>\n<li>It can also arise in malignant diseases like <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"47\">cutaneous<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"631\">T cell<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"976\">lymphoma<\/span> (the most common association, affecting 10-30% in cases of alopecia mucinosa), Kaposi <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1665\">sarcoma<\/span> and Hodgkin lymphoma (especially in children).<\/li>\n<li>Typical skin characteristics of the underlying disease may also be present.<\/li>\n<li>A skin <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"24\">biopsy<\/span> They need to be distinguished from primary mucinous alopecia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-se-diagnostica-la-alopecia-mucinosa\"><\/span>How is mucinous alopecia diagnosed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Mucinous alopecia is diagnosed by its clinical appearance and is supported by <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1419\">histopathological<\/span> biopsy findings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mucin accumulation in the pilosebaceous <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1300\">follicle<\/span> and sebaceous glands<\/li>\n<li>Keratinous waste within a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1306\">cystic<\/span> cavity<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"148\">Inflammation<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Degeneration of follicular structures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"474\">Histological<\/span> The characteristics of the underlying disease are present in secondary mucinous alopecia.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cual-es-el-diagnostico-diferencial-de-alopecia-mucinosa\"><\/span>Which is the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"813\">differential diagnosis<\/span> mucinous alopecia?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Secondary causes of mucinous alopecia, such as mycosis fungoides, may go undiagnosed for some years, requiring careful follow-up and biopsy. Other conditions that may need to be considered in the differential diagnosis include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Alopecia areata, which causes non-scarring <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"324\">located<\/span> bald patches<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"378\">Seborrheic<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"53\">dermatitis<\/span>, psoriasis and ringworm of the head, which can cause <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"385\">scaly<\/span> plaques and hair loss<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"65\">Discoid<\/span> lupus erythematosus and lichen planopilaris, which can cause localized areas of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"384\">climbing<\/span> and scarring alopecia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCual-es-el-tratamiento-para-la-alopecia-mucinosa\"><\/span>What is the treatment for mucinous alopecia?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is no proven effective treatment for mucinous alopecia. Usually, acute and primary mucinous alopecia that occurs in children resolves spontaneously. Because there is a small chance of spontaneous resolution for other forms of the disease, the effect of treatment can be difficult to assess. Some treatments that have been tried with limited success include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1330\">Current<\/span>intralesional and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"380\">systemic<\/span> corticosteroids\n<\/li>\n<li>Oral antibiotics like minocycline\n<\/li>\n<li>Dapsone<\/li>\n<li>Indomethacin<\/li>\n<li>Interferons<\/li>\n<li>Topical and systemic photochemotherapy (PUVA)<\/li>\n<li>Topical Nitrogen Mustard<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1326\">Radiation therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li>UVA1 phototherapy<\/li>\n<li>Topical bexarotene 1% <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1123\">gel<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Secondary mucinous alopecia should be treated appropriately for the underlying skin disease, particularly if it is cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.<\/p>\n<\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Que es alopecia mucinosa?
