Melanotan II is a variant of melanotan I (afamelanotide), a drug used in the treatment of erythropoietic protoporphyria.<\/p>\n<p>Melanotan II is not currently approved for the treatment of any medical conditions. It has been reported to cause a wide range of potentially serious side effects. Warnings against its use have been issued from the United States, the United Kingdom, and several other countries.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-funciona-melanotan-II\"><\/span>How does melanotan II work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Melanotan II non-selectively mimics the action of melanocortin <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1733\">peptides<\/span>. These are natural hormones involved with pigmentation, energy. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"576\">homeostasis<\/span>, sexual functioning, the immune system, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"148\">inflammation<\/span>, and the cardiovascular system. Like melanotan I (afamelanotide), melanotan II stimulates the production of eumelanin, which causes the skin to darken (tan).<\/p>\n<p>Melanotan II is usually given as a liquid injection under the skin, commonly every other day. Trials have shown that the tanning effect can occur in 5 doses.<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Efectos-secundarios-de-melanotan-II\"><\/span>Melanotan II Side Effects<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Short-term side effects after administration include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>redness of the face\n<\/li>\n<li>Decreased appetite, nausea and vomiting.<\/li>\n<li>In men, spontaneous erections 1 to 5 hours after administration (priapism), associated with yawning and stretching complexes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the long term, there is concern that melanotan II may increase the risk of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1670\">Melanoma<\/span> \u2013 a potentially serious form of skin <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"30\">Cancer<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>Deepening of the color of moles, new moles and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1395\">atypical<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"785\">melanocytic<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"354\">naevi<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"182\">Melanonychia<\/span> \u2013 brown to black discoloration of one or more <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"193\">nail<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"618\">Rhabdomyolysis<\/span> \u2013 potentially fatal destruction of muscle cells<\/li>\n<li>encephalopathy <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"350\">syndrome<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is also concern about possible side effects due to contamination or lack of sterility if melanotan II is incorrectly prepared or needles are shared.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sexual-disfuncion\"><\/span>Sexual <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1253\">dysfunction<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>During clinical testing for use as a tanning agent, melanotan II was found to be a potent stimulator of male erections. A new drug based on melanotan II, bremelanotide, was developed to take advantage of this property. It has been observed in several studies to increase male erection rigidity and duration, as well as male sexual desire.
