What are mucinosis?<\/h2>\n

Mucinosis is a diverse group of rare skin disorders. All involve the accumulation of abnormal amounts of mucin<\/span>. This is a gelatinous complex carbohydrate substance, called hyaluronic acid, which normally occurs as part of the connective tissue<\/span> at dermis<\/span> or middle layer of the skin. The abnormal deposits that occur in mucinosis can be located<\/span> or extended<\/span>. They range from minor cosmetic discomfort to potentially serious conditions involving internal organs. The underlying cause of this group of disorders is not well understood.<\/p>\n

Extensive or generalized<\/span> Mucinosis include:<\/p>\n

  • Scleromyxedema<\/li>\n
  • Lattice<\/span> erythematous<\/span> mucinosis<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Scleroedema<\/li>\n
  • Follicular<\/span> mucinosis<\/li>\n
  • Cutaneous<\/span> lupus mucinosis<\/li>\n
  • \nPretibial<\/span> myxedema associated with thyroid disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Localized mucinosis include:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Lichen myxoedematosus (papular<\/span> mucinosis)<\/li>\n
    • Acral<\/span> persistent papular mucinosis<\/li>\n
    • Mucinous nevus<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Myxoid<\/span> or digital mucous<\/span> cyst<\/span><\/li>\n
    • \nFocal<\/span> cutaneous mucinosis (see pathology<\/span> of focal cutaneous mucinosis): a harmless solitaire injury<\/span> less than 1 cm in diameter that can be removed by surgery excision<\/span> if required.<\/li>\n
    • Angiomyxoma: a benign<\/span> tumor<\/span> that can arise individually or in numbers. Multiple lesions may indicate the Carney complex in which benign tumors can develop in the heart.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
