<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"290\">ulcer<\/span>?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>An aphthous ulcer is an ulcer that forms on the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"188\">mucous<\/span> membranes Also called canker sores, aphthosis, aphthous <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"272\">stomatitis<\/span> and thrush.<\/p>\n<p>An aphthous ulcer is typically a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"805\">recurrent<\/span> round or oval sore or ulcer inside the mouth in an area where the skin is not firmly attached to the underlying bone, such as on the inside of the lips and cheeks or under the tongue. Aphthous <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1279\">ulcers<\/span> It can also affect the genitals in men and women.<\/p>\n<p>Recurrent aphthous ulcers are mostly a minor discomfort, but they are associated with significant health problems in some people.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQuien-esta-en-riesgo-de-ulcera-aftosa\"><\/span>Who is at risk for foot and mouth disease?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Anyone can get an aphthous ulcer; 20% of the population has one or more, at least occasionally. A genital aphthous ulcer is also called a Lipschutz ulcer.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A genital aphthous ulcer is more common in women than in men.<\/li>\n<li>It can be accompanied by considerable pain and swelling.<\/li>\n<li>Reactive genital ulcer follows a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"145\">infection<\/span>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NSGU simple oral aphtosis is more likely to be associated with <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"380\">systemic<\/span> disease, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Behcet <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"350\">syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Gluten sensitive enteropathy (celiac disease)<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"490\">Inflammatory<\/span> gastrointestinal disease<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Human immunodeficiency virus (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"127\">HIV<\/span>) infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See images of vulvar ulcers ... <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQue-causa-una-ulcera-aftosa\"><\/span>What causes an aphthous ulcer?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The exact reason why aphthous ulcer develops is not yet clearly defined. About 40% of people who have aphthous ulcers have a family history of aphthous ulcer. Current thinking is that the immune system is altered by some external factor and reacts abnormally against a protein in <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1018\">mucous membrane<\/span> tissue.<\/p>\n<p>Factors that appear to trigger ulcer outbreaks include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Emotional stress and lack of sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Mechanic <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1365\">trauma<\/span>eg self-inflicted bite<\/li>\n<li>Nutritional deficiency, particularly of vitamin B, iron and folic acid.<\/li>\n<li>Certain foods, including chocolate.<\/li>\n<li>Certain toothpastes; this may be related to sodium laureth sulfate (the foaming component of toothpaste) <\/li>\n<li>Menstruation<\/li>\n<li>Certain medications, including nicorandil, given for <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1146\">angina pectoris<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>Viral infections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cual-es-el-diagnostico-diferencial-de-ulcera-aftosa\"><\/span>Which is the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"813\">differential diagnosis<\/span> aphthous ulcer?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Other causes of mouth ulcer should be considered, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Herpes Simplex <\/li>\n<li>Herpangina<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"90\">Erythema<\/span> multiform<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Fixed drug <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"704\">eruption<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCuales-son-los-signos-y-sintomas-de-una-ulcera-aftosa\"><\/span>What are the signs and symptoms of an aphthous ulcer?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Recurrent aphthous ulcer usually begins as a raised, yellowish, round spot surrounded by a red halo. This then breaks down into a perforated ulcer, which is covered with a freely attached white, yellow, or grayish membrane. The surrounding tissue is healthy and unaffected. The ulcer can be painful, especially if it is irritated by movement or when eating certain types of food, such as citrus.<\/p>\n<p>People can experience a single ulcer or multiple ulcers. Multiple ulcers tend to spread widely through a person&#039;s mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Aphthous ulceration is classified into three types.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recurrent minor aphthous ulcer (80%). It is less than 5 mm in diameter and heals in 1\u20132 weeks.<\/li>\n<li>Aphthous ulcer major, which is large (often more than 10 mm) and takes weeks or months to heal and leaves a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1191\">scar<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"317\">Herpetiform<\/span> ulcers, which are multiple point ulcers that heal in a month. They are carried out if there are recurrent attacks of multiple or severe oral ulcers or complex aphthosis.<\/p>\n<p>Blood tests can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blood count, iron, B12 and folate studies.<\/li>\n<li>Gluten <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"425\">antibody<\/span> celiac disease tests\n<\/li>\n<li>Fecal calprotectin test for Crohn&#039;s disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Microbiology swabs assess the presence of <em>Candida albicans<\/em>, <em>Herpes Simplex<\/em> virus and Vincent <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"883\">organisms<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCual-es-el-tratamiento-para-una-ulcera-aftosa\"><\/span>What is the treatment for an aphthous ulcer?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is no cure for an aphthous ulcer. Most recurrent minor aphthous ulcers heal within 1 to 2 weeks without any treatment. The main goal of treatment is to decrease pain and discomfort and promote healing.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Medidas-generales\"><\/span>General measures<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Protective pastes that form a barrier over the ulcer to reduce exposure to irritating substances.<\/li>\n<li>Superficial cauterization of tissues with a silver nitrate bar.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Local anesthetics benzocaine and lignocaine (lidocaine) to reduce pain.<\/li>\n<li>Medicated toothpaste without sodium laureth sulfate<\/li>\n<li>Antibacterial mouthwashes to reduce secondary infection.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid foods that trigger or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1562\">exacerbate<\/span> ulcers<\/li>\n<li>Dietary vitamin or mineral supplements, if diet is deficient.<\/li>\n<li>Stress reduction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Medicamentos-recetados-para-la-ulcera-aftosa\"><\/span>Prescription drugs for foot and mouth ulcer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1330\">Current<\/span> Prescription medications include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Tetracycline suspension as a mouthwash\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Topical corticosteroids such as lotions, creams, or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1124\">paste<\/span>, often triamcinolone in toothpaste<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Calcineurin inhibitors: topical pimecrolimus or tacrolimus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In severe cases, particularly if there are systemic symptoms, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1413\">anti-inflammatory<\/span> Oral medications (use not indicated on the label) can be considered:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Tetracycline, p. doxycycline 50-100mg daily for 3-6 months or more.<\/li>\n<li>Dapsone<\/li>\n<li>Colchicine<\/li>\n<li>Systemic steroids<\/li>\n<li>Immunosuppressive agents such as azathioprine, methotrexate, cyclosporine.\n<\/li>\n<li>Apremilast, which has been approved in the USA.
