disease caused by aspergillus.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQue-es-el-aspergillus\"><\/span>What is aspergillus?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Aspergillus is a fungus (mold) found in abundance throughout the environment in soil, decomposing plant matter, ornamental plants, water, house dust and building materials. More than 100 different species of aspergillus have been identified, but the species most commonly implicated in human disease are <em>A. fumigatus<\/em>, <em>A. flavus<\/em>and<em> A. niger<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQuien-contrae-aspergilosis\"><\/span>Who gets aspergillosis?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Aspergillosis is most often diagnosed when conditions that result in impaired immunity become more <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1676\">predominant<\/span>. For example, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"612\">invader<\/span> Aspergillosis is estimated to occur in 5 to 13% of bone marrow transplant recipients, in 5 to 25% of patients who have received heart or lung transplants, and in 10 to 20% of patients receiving intensive treatment. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1619\">chemotherapy<\/span> for <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"613\">leukemia<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The term aspergillosis is not used to refer to <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"319\">chronic<\/span> Nail infections caused by aspergillus, which is a form of onychomycosis that affects people with normal immune systems. <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-se-produce-la-aspergilosis\"><\/span>How does aspergillosis occur?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Aspergillus most commonly enters the human body through <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1355\">inhalation<\/span>. Most people breathe in Aspergillus spores every day, with no ill effects. However, in patients with pre-existing medical conditions, aspergillus can begin to proliferate and cause disease, primarily a lung. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"145\">infection<\/span>. Infection is more likely if a large number of spores are inhaled, such as when exposed to a very dusty environment or during building renovation.<\/p>\n<p>In rare cases, the fungus can enter through the skin (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"949\">primary<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"47\">cutaneous<\/span> aspergillosis), particularly in patients with thermal burns or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1365\">trauma<\/span>. Occasionally, outbreaks of primary cutaneous aspergillosis are due to contaminated biomedical equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Aspergillus can also spread to the skin through the bloodstream.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCuales-son-las-caracteristicas-clinicas-de-la-aspergilosis\"><\/span>What are the clinical characteristics of aspergillosis?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are four common clinical patterns of disease.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Agudo-aspergilosis-invasiva\"><\/span>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"349\">Acute<\/span> invasive aspergillosis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute invasive apsergillus has a rapid onset and the disease progresses rapidly.<\/li>\n<li>The fungus invades and damages body tissues; most commonly the lungs and\/or sinuses, but can spread throughout the body through the bloodstream.<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms include <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1176\">fever<\/span>, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, facial swelling, nosebleed, bulging of one eye, or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"402\">neurological <\/span>symptoms Other symptoms develop if the infection spreads beyond the lungs and sinuses.<\/li>\n<li>There is a high mortality rate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Acute invasive apsergillus affects people with severely impaired immunity, particularly those:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>who has had bone marrow <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1792\">transplant<\/span> or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1128\">solid<\/span> organ transplant<\/li>\n<li>on high doses of corticosteroids or chemotherapy for cancers such as leukemia<\/li>\n<li>with advanced <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"127\">HIV<\/span> infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Aspergilosis-alergica\"><\/span>allergic aspergillosis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Allergic aspergillosis is a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1335\">allergic reaction<\/span> to the aspergillus fungus in the lungs and\/or paranasal sinuses.<\/li>\n<li>Pulmonary symptoms include fever, wheezing and cough. Patients may cough up blood or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"188\">mucous<\/span> plugs<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"267\">Breast<\/span> Symptoms include facial pressure, headache, stuffy nose, yellow or green <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"840\">download<\/span> of the nose and cough.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Allergic aspergillosis can affect anyone, but it is more common in people with asthma or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1306\">cystic<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"102\">fibrosis<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Aspergiloma\"><\/span>Aspergilloma<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Aspergilloma is a \u201cmushroom ball\u201d that develops in a preexisting lung cavity.<\/li>\n<li>It may cause no symptoms or the patient may cough up blood (which can be profuse and life-threatening).<\/li>\n<li>Aspergillomas can also develop in other organs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Aspergilloma affects people with an underlying lung disease that causes cavities, such as tuberculosis, emphysema, or cystic fibrosis.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cronico-necrotizante-pulmonar-aspergilosis\"><\/span>Chronic <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1411\">necrotizing<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1009\">pulmonary<\/span> aspergillosis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis is a rare condition that causes the death of tissue within the lungs.<\/li>\n<li>This form of aspergillosis progresses slowly over weeks or months.<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms often include fever, cough, night sweats, and weight loss.<\/li>\n<li>Chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis usually affects people with mild immune impairment, such as underlying lung disease, alcoholism, or who are on long-term corticosteroid treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCuales-son-las-manifestaciones-cutaneas-de-la-aspergilosis\"><\/span>What are the skin manifestations of aspergillosis?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Skin changes are most commonly a consequence of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"309\">extended<\/span> Aspergillus infection in patients with impaired immunity.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>About 5 to 10% of patients with invasive aspergillosis develop skin lesions.<\/li>\n<li>Lesions include single or multiple red or violet indurations <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"368\">plates<\/span> or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"366\">papules<\/span>. The lesions may be tender or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"902\">symptom<\/span>-free. As the lesions evolve, pus- or blood-filled blisters develop in the center, which eventually become <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"770\">necrotic<\/span> blackened <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1279\">ulcers<\/span> or scabs. Special mushroom stains may be necessary, but other mushrooms may look almost identical.<\/li>\n<li>chest x-ray or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"799\">Connecticut<\/span> Examination of the lungs may reveal characteristic abnormalities.<\/li>\n<li>A newer one <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"410\">antigen<\/span>A test based on detecting evidence of invasive aspergillosis in the blood is available.
