It was withdrawn from the market in 2009. This information page is for historical interest only.<\/p>\n<p>Efalizumab belongs to the class of biological response modifiers called <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"631\">T cell<\/span> blockers It is an effective treatment in patients with moderate to severe. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"235\">license plate<\/span> psoriasis.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-funciona\"><\/span>How does it work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Efalizumab is a genetically modified form of mouse protein that targets blocking <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"416\">T cell<\/span> activation and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"893\">proliferation<\/span> by binding to CD11a receptors in <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"417\">T cells<\/span>. This prevents T cells from being released <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"434\">cytokines<\/span>, which are the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"949\">primary<\/span> cause of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"148\">inflammation<\/span>, redness, itching and scaly skin patches characteristic of psoriasis.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-se-da\"><\/span>How does it happen?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Initial trials of efalizumab included intravenous (IV) administration of the drug. However, a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"900\">subcutaneous<\/span> Formulation (SC) has been developed and is currently being used. Once the weekly dose over a period of 12 weeks improves psoriasis to some extent in approximately 50% of patients.<\/p>\n<p>Improvements in psoriasis made after 12 weeks of treatment can be maintained with additional weekly doses or doses every two weeks.<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Efectos-secundarios\"><\/span>Side effects<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Efalizumab appears to be well tolerated. The most frequent side effects include headache, nausea, chills, pain, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1176\">fever<\/span> and not specific <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"145\">infection<\/span> like the common cold. These occurred more frequently after the first injection and decreased with subsequent doses.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Riesgos-de-tratamiento\"><\/span>Treatment risks.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Efalizumab is an immunosuppressive agent and therefore increases susceptibility to infections.<\/p>\n<p>WARNING: April 9, 2009. Genetech decided to voluntarily withdraw efalizumab (Raptiva) from the US market due to a potentially increased risk of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1759\">progressive<\/span> multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). <br \/> February 19, 2009. The Drug Evaluation and Research Center of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a public health notice regarding updated safety information on Raptiva (efalizumamb) due to Four reports of patients taking this drug who developed the rare life-threatening brain infection, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), and other infections.<\/p>\n<div class=\"grey-box\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 0.9em;\">New Zealand approved data sheets are the official source of information for these prescription drugs, including approved uses and risk information.
