As in the cases of other free-living amoebas (eg, <em>Naegleria<\/em> and <em>Acanthamoeba<\/em>), a story of swimming in freshwater lakes, ponds, and heated pools is common.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks or years later (5 to 8 months on average) the infection spreads to the central nervous system causing amebiasis. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"716\">encephalitis<\/span> (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"148\">inflammation<\/span> of the brain).<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cuales-son-los-sintomas-B-mandrillaris-%C2%BFencefalitis\"><\/span>What are the symptoms <em>B. mandrillaris<\/em> encephalitis?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Characteristics of <em>B. mandrillaris<\/em> Encephalitis includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1176\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"489\">Focal<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"402\">neurological <\/span>deficits (eg double vision has been commonly reported)<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms of meningeal irritation (eg, stiff neck and intolerance to bright light)<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms of increase <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1043\">intracranial<\/span> pressure: headache, nausea and vomiting, and reduced level of consciousness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the 95% of patients, B. mandrillaris encephalitis is fatal.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Como-B-mandrillaris-infeccion-afecta-la-piel\"><\/span>How <em>B. mandrillaris<\/em> infection affects the skin?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The dermatological significance of <em>B. mandrillaris<\/em> is that a typical skin <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"164\">injury<\/span> It appears before the infection spreads to the central nervous system. Classical skin injury is a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"731\">asymptomatic<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1076\">granulomatous<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"235\">license plate<\/span> (a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"198\">nodule<\/span> made of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"490\">inflammatory<\/span> cells), generally located on the central face. They are often described as rubbery in consistency. Single or multiple lesions may be present,<\/p>\n<p>The lesion can enlarge (to involve the entire face in some cases) and occasionally causes smaller satellite lesions. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1278\">Ulceration<\/span> occurs at a late stage. Occasionally, injury can occur in the extremities.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-es-el-diagnostico-de-B-mandrillaris-infeccion-hecha\"><\/span>How is the diagnosis of <em>B. mandrillaris<\/em> infection made?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>How <em>B. mandrillaris<\/em> infection is very rare, diagnosis is often delayed. The diagnosis is made by finding the amoeba in the skin or other tissue. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"24\">Biopsy<\/span> granulomatous tuberculoid specimen <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"541\">infiltrate<\/span> inside <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"61\">dermis<\/span> and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"900\">subcutaneous<\/span> Trophozoite tissues and cysts are rarely seen.<\/p>\n<p><em>B. mandrillaris<\/em> it&#039;s hard <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"837\">culture<\/span> in the laboratory in normal culture media. the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"882\">organism<\/span> can be grown in specific mammalian cell culture lines or by <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1870\">inoculation<\/span> of mice if there is clinical suspicion of <em>Balamuthia<\/em> infection. A <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"941\">Polymerase chain reaction<\/span> (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"942\">PCR<\/span>) has been developed for research purposes, but is available in some community laboratories.<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tratamiento-de-B-Mandrillaris-infeccion\"><\/span>Treatment of <em>B.
