The clinical manifestations increase over time.<\/p>\n<p>At least 8 different clinics <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1062\">phenotypes<\/span> of NF have been identified. It is classified into 2 different types:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1)<\/li>\n<li>Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Neurofibromatosis-1\"><\/span>Neurofibromatosis 1<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>NF1 occurs in about 1 in 3,000 births. It is also known as von Recklinghausen&#039;s disease. It is characterized by the presence of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6 or more coffee with milk <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"343\">macules<\/span> - light brown flat birthmarks<\/li>\n<li>Freckles in the folds of the skin. <\/li>\n<li>Lisch <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"367\">nodules<\/span> in the iris of the eye<\/li>\n<li>Multiple <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1722\">neurofibromas<\/span> - tumors hanging from the skin <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Neurofibromatosis-2\"><\/span>Neurofibromatosis 2<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>NF2 occurs in about 1 in 50,000 births. Also known as <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"23\">bilateral<\/span> acoustic neurofibromatosis or central neurofibromatosis. It is characterized by multiple tumors and injuries to the brain and spine. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1762\">cable<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>Lonely <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"875\">neurofibroma<\/span> it is not associated with NF1 or NF2.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQue-causa-la-neurofibromatosis\"><\/span>What causes neurofibromatosis?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>NF1 and NF2 occur as a result of defects in different <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"775\">genes<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NF1 is caused by a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"870\">mutation<\/span> in neurofibromin <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"774\">gene<\/span> located in the pericentromeric region of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1271\">chromosome<\/span> 17)<\/li>\n<li>NF2 is caused by a mutation on chromosome 22.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The mutated gene can be inherited from a parent who has NF by <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"828\">autosomal<\/span> dominant transmission, or it may be a founder gene due to spontaneous mutation. They can be present at birth and increase in number during the first years of life.<\/p>\n<p>Although isolated caf\u00e9 au lait macules can be found in many people without NF, people with more than 5 of them have a good chance of also having NF1, particularly if they appear on the skin within the first 5 years of life.<\/p>\n<p>More than 5 caf\u00e9 au lait macules are found in 1.8% in newborns, 25-40% in children, and 14% in adults with NF1.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pecas\"><\/span>Freckles<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Freckles in the armpits also known as Crowe <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"899\">sign<\/span> and it is characteristic of neurofibromatosis type 1. Freckles appear during puberty, after the development of caf\u00e9 au lait macules and before neurofibromas. After puberty, Lisch&#039;s nodules are present in the 97-100% of NF1 patients. Clinically, they don&#039;t cause any problems, but they do help confirm the diagnosis.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Neurofibromas\"><\/span>Neurofibromas <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Neurofibromas are made up of Schwann cells, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"101\">fibroblasts<\/span>, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"582\">mast cells<\/span>and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"753\">vascular<\/span> components, and can develop at any point along a nerve. They are three types: <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"47\">cutaneous<\/span>, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"900\">subcutaneous<\/span>and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"891\">plexiform<\/span>. Cutaneous and subcutaneous neurofibromas are not specific for neurofibromatosis, but plexiform neurofibromas are only seen in NF1.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Skin neurofibromas are <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"37\">circumscribed<\/span>Shallow, smooth nodules such as brown, pink, or skin-colored buttons with a smooth or firm consistency. They may have <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"887\">pathognomonic<\/span> buttonhole invagination when pressed with a finger. They do not have <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"176\">evil one<\/span> potential.<\/li>\n<li>Subcutaneous neurofibromas are similar to cutaneous neurofibromas, except that they are of deeper origin. Problems in other parts of the body include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1631\">Malformation<\/span> of the long bones (below the knee and elbow) and the curvature of the spine (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1224\">scoliosis<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li>Short stature and growth hormone deficiency<\/li>\n<li>Learning difficulties (speech problems) and behavior problems (25\u201340% have learning disabilities, 5\u201310% may have mental retardation)<\/li>\n<li>Tumors of the optic nerve; these can cause visual loss<\/li>\n<li>High blood pressure and other blood problems.<\/li>\n<li>Tumors in the spine and brain; these increase the risk of epilepsy<\/li>\n<li>Tumors or lesions in the gastrointestinal tract that can cause bleeding or obstruction.<\/li>\n<li>Hearing defects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although most tumors are <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"22\">benign<\/span> (non-cancerous), it is estimated that a person with NF1 has a 3 to 15% increased risk of developing cancerous tumors.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Neurofibromatosis-2-2\"><\/span>Neurofibromatosis 2<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>NF2 does not have as many external signs as NF1. It is characterized by multiple tumors and injuries to the brain and spinal cord. First <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"902\">symptom<\/span> is generally hearing loss due to <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"289\">tumor<\/span> growing in one or both auditory <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"952\">nerves<\/span>. Often this is not evident until the late teens or early twenties.<\/p>\n<p>Tumors in NF2 are usually benign.
