plants.<\/p>\n<p>Phytophotodermatitis usually occurs during spring or summer after some outdoor activity on a sunny day during which there has been contact with one of the responsible plants.<\/p>\n<p>Its name has 3 components: phyto (plant), photo (light) and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"53\">dermatitis<\/span> (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"490\">inflammatory<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"255\">eruption<\/span>)<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCuales-son-las-caracteristicas-clinicas-de-la-fitofotodermatitis\"><\/span>What are the clinical features of phytophotodermatitis?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>During the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"349\">acute<\/span> inflammatory stage, itchy blisters and red patches appear on <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"311\">exposed skin<\/span>, usually the forearms or legs. These are often unevenly and oddly distributed. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"321\">Linear<\/span> Lesions are characteristic. Contact with the plant, fruit, or vegetable may have been brief and inadvertent. The reaction depends on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The amount of juice or sap on the skin.<\/li>\n<li>The amount of furocoumarins in the plant, which is believed to be produced in response to fungal attack<\/li>\n<li>Amount of exposure to UVA rays. These perfumes contain a high concentration of bergapten (5-methoxypsoralens).<\/p>\n<p>Berloque dermatitis is rare today, but it can arise if an older fragrance is applied to the skin. Current regulations restrict the concentration of bergapten to be below the threshold required to cause contact dermatitis or pigmentation.<\/p>\n<p>Acute inflammatory dermatitis due to berloque dermatitis is sometimes unrecognized, and the patient may have striated pigmentation on the neck or wrist. <\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fotoxicidad-por-PUVA\"><\/span>PUVA photoxicity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Photochemotherapy (PUVA) is a treatment for inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"491\">eczema<\/span>. Treatment consists of taking psoralens by mouth or applying psoralens. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1119\">solution<\/span> to the skin, followed by exposure to UVA rays, under controlled circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>PUVA has beneficial effects on skin diseases, but as it involves the same process that occurs in phytophotodermatitis, it can cause excessive pigmentation. This means that <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1413\">anti-inflammatory<\/span> Treatments like topical steroids are only helpful in the early phase of redness and blistering.<\/p>\n<p>The post-inflammatory pigmentation that follows phytophotodermatitis responds poorly to treatment with bleaching creams. It gradually fades over weeks or months. By using covering clothing and broad spectrum sunscreens, the affected skin must be protected from further sun exposure, which could darken pigmentation.
