It is a common infection among dogs, particularly in areas where it is <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1676\">predominant<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The disease mainly affects the lungs and almost 50% of patients often show minimal or no symptoms. The infection can spread to other parts of the body. The skin is affected more frequently and is involved in approximately 20-40% of cases.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Causas-y-factores-de-riesgo\"><\/span>Causes and risk factors.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Infection occurs by inhaling spores that are carried into the air when contaminated soil or wood is disturbed. Humans and animals like dogs, rats, and cats can become infected. The disease is rarely transmitted from human to human or from animal to human. Very rarely, infection can occur through the skin.<\/p>\n<p>Blastomycosis can be found worldwide, but is most common in the south-central and mid-western United States and Canada. the annual <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"578\">incidence<\/span> in these areas it is around 1-2 cases per 100,000 people. One or many injuries can develop.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Injuries start as <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"366\">papules<\/span>, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1016\">pustules<\/span> or as <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"900\">subcutaneous<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"367\">nodules<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>In weeks or months the injuries become <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1279\">ulcers<\/span> and they form crusted sores.<\/li>\n<li>Over a period of months to years, the lesions enlarge and heal to form raised wart-like scars. Injuries can cover much of the face and cause severe disfigurement.<\/li>\n<li>Irreversible scars often occur.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diagnostico\"><\/span>Diagnosis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Laboratory and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1005\">radiological<\/span> Studies are conducted to confirm the diagnosis of blastomycosis.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sputum <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"867\">microscopy<\/span> and cultures<\/li>\n<li>Serological tests<\/li>\n<li>Chest x-ray and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"799\">Connecticut<\/span> exploration<\/li>\n<li>Fabric and leather <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"24\">biopsy<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The patient&#039;s history is also important in the diagnosis, particularly in areas where there may be an outbreak of disease.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tratamiento\"><\/span>Treatment<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Patients with blastomycosis confined to the lungs and without severe symptoms may not require any treatment. Symptoms are usually self-limiting and the infection clears up spontaneously. Treatment should be used if the infection in the lung worsens.<\/p>\n<p>When the infection spreads and the skin is affected, spontaneous resolution does not occur and treatment is necessary.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Orally administered itraconazole is the drug of choice in mild to moderate disease affecting the lungs or in disease affecting other organs.<\/li>\n<li>Intravenous amphotericin B is the drug of choice for severe or life-threatening blastomycosis (for example, ARDS, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1115\">CNS<\/span> intervention, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1695\">immunocompromised<\/span> patients).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Patients with limited skin lesions and relatively mild lung involvement generally make a full recovery.
