Humans can become infected by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eating or drinking contaminated food, particularly unpasteurized milk and cheese.<\/li>\n<li>Direct contact with an infected animal. the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"883\">organisms<\/span> can enter humans through an open wound in the skin, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"188\">mucous<\/span> membrane, or <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"574\">conjunctiva<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Inhaling the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"882\">organism<\/span>; This route is a particular problem for laboratory workers or those who work with animals or animal carcasses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Person-to-person spread is extremely rare.<\/p>\n<p>Brucellosis is now rare in developed countries due to pasteurization of milk and milk products, and diseases <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1854\">control<\/span> Between Animals About 100-200 cases occur per year in the United States. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"309\">Extended<\/span> purple-red papulonodular lesions (small bumps)<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"90\">Erythema<\/span> knotty<\/li>\n<li>Extended <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"938\">maculopapular<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"255\">eruption<\/span> (flat red-purple or slightly raised spots)<\/li>\n<li>Extensive <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"250\">purple<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Contact with animals with brucellosis can also cause:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Contact <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1646\">urticaria<\/span> - Itching and redness of the upper extremities (and sometimes the face) after a few hours of exposure in veterinarians and animal handlers. This resolves in about 2 weeks and may be due to a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1335\">allergic reaction<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Chronic <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1278\">ulceration<\/span> and multiple abscesses on the skin and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"900\">subcutaneous<\/span> tissues in patients at high risk of occupational exposure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-se-hace-el-diagnostico-de-brucelosis\"><\/span>How is the diagnosis of brucellosis made?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Brucellosis can be diagnosed by detecting Brucella organisms in blood or bone marrow samples. WHO guidelines recommend the following regimens:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Combination of doxycycline and rifampicin administered daily for 6 weeks. Convenient regimen but increased risk of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1500\">relapse<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Oral doxycycline daily for 6 weeks and intramuscular injection of streptomycin daily for 2 to 3 weeks. It appears to be more effective, especially in relapse prevention.<\/li>\n<li>Fluoroquinolone (eg, Ciprofloxacin) plus rifampin for 6 weeks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Relapse of infection occurs in up to 10% of patients, even with appropriate treatment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-se-puede-prevenir-la-brucelosis\"><\/span>How can brucellosis be prevented?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>There is no vaccine against human brucella available, but immunizing animals reduces human exposure to the disease.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid unpasteurized milk, cheese, or ice.<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1121\">cream<\/span>especially when you travel to <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"814\">endemic<\/span> zones<\/li>\n<li>People who work with animals and animal carcasses should wear protective clothing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00bfQu\u00e9 es la brucelosis?
