\nEpithelioid<\/span> Cellular histiocytoma is a well recognized variant of cutaneous<\/span> fibrous histiocytoma that can be confused with another benign<\/span> and evil one<\/span> Mesenchymal lesions. It is also known as epithelioid fibrous histiocytoma and epithelioid dermatofibroma.<\/p>\n<\/span>\nHistology<\/span> epithelioid histiocytoma<\/span><\/h2>\nIn epithelioid histiocytoma, sections show a central location, circumscribed<\/span> tumor<\/span> underlying epidermal<\/span> collar (figure 1). The tumor is made up of epithelioid cells arranged in sheets and sometimes a stormy pattern. Individual cells show abundant eosinophilic<\/span> cytoplasm<\/span> with round vesicular<\/span> nuclei<\/span> and prominent nucleoli (Figures 2-4). Cells may be noticeably enlarged and show some nuclear<\/span> atypia<\/span> (Figure 4).<\/p>\nThere is often an associate inflammatory<\/span> cell infiltrate<\/span> which can be useful for diagnosis (Figure 3). <\/span>Special studies for epithelioid histiocytoma.<\/span><\/h2>\nImmunohistochemical studies reveal positivity with Factor 13a, and there is variable positivity with CD68. ALK-1 has been increasingly recognized as being translocated in this tumor. This can be detected with immunohistochemistry<\/span> or FISH<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

<\/span>\nDifferential diagnosis<\/span> epithelioid histiocytoma pathology<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/h2>\nMelanoma<\/span> – Amelanotic<\/span> melanoma will show similar large epithelioid cells but will generally show more pleomorphism<\/span> and epidermal involvement.
