<\/span><\/h2>\nErythrasma affects both men and women, but it is believed to be more common in the groin of men and between the fingers of women.<\/p>\n
It is reported to be more predominant<\/span> in the following circumstances: <\/p>\n\n- Warm weather<\/span><\/li>\n
- Excessive sweating<\/li>\n
- Colored skin<\/li>\n
- Diabetes<\/li>\n
- Obesity<\/li>\n
- Poor hygiene<\/li>\n
- Advanced age<\/li>\n
- Other immunocompromised<\/span> state.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

<\/span>What Causes Erythrasma?<\/span><\/h2>\nthe bacteria<\/span> responsible for erythrasma are gram-positive, non-spore-forming, aerobic<\/span> or facultative bacilli called Corynebacterium minutissimum<\/em>. <\/p>\nErythrasma may coexist or be confused with other causes of intertrigo<\/span> including fungal infections such as ringworm or Candida albicans<\/em> (thrush). <\/p>\n<\/span>What are the clinical features of erythrasma?<\/span><\/h2>\nErythrasma presents as well defined<\/span> pink or brown patches with fine climbing<\/span> and superficial fissures<\/span>. Mild itching may be present.<\/p>\nCommon sites for erythrasma are the armpits, groin, and between the toes. the intergluteal<\/span> fold, submammary<\/span>, and the periumbilical skin can also be affected. Extended<\/span> Infections are most often associated with diabetes mellitus.<\/p>\nErythrasma is classified into three types based on location.<\/p>\n
\n- Interdigital erythrasma: between the web spaces of the 3rd, 4th and 5th toes<\/li>\n
- \nIntertriginous<\/span> erythrasma: in the armpits, groin, under the breasts and belly button<\/span>\n<\/li>\n
- \nGeneralized<\/span>\/ disciform erythrasma: on the trunk <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n

<\/span>What are the complications of erythrasma?<\/span><\/h2>\nErythrasma is usually self-limited. It can be complicated by contact dermatitis<\/span>, lichenification<\/span>, post-inflammatory<\/span> pigmentation<\/span>and coinfection with other bacteria, yeasts, and dermatophytes.<\/p>\nSerious complications are very rare. Cornebacteria have been reported to cause abscess<\/span>cellulitis cutaneous<\/span> granuloma<\/span>, endocarditis<\/span>, pyelonephritis, endophthalmitis, arteriovenous fistula<\/span> infection<\/span> and meningitis<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

<\/span>How is the diagnosis of erythrasma made?<\/span><\/h2>\nErythrasma has a typical clinical appearance. The diagnosis can be supported by the following investigations.<\/p>\n
\n- Wooden lamp<\/span> skin examination: long wavelength Ultraviolet radiation<\/span> causes the erythrasma to fluoresce a coral pink color due to coproporphyrin III released by the bacteria. The fluorescence is not seen if the skin has been washed recently because the responsible porphyrin<\/span> is soluble in water<\/span><\/li>\n
- \nSwab or skin scrapes: microscopy<\/span> with periodic acid-Schiff, methanamine <\/span>silver, or a gram stain<\/span> can reveal gram-positive filamentary rods. Methylene blue also stains <\/span>C. minutissimum<\/em>. <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
<\/span>What is the treatment for erythrasma?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\nErythrasma can be treated with antiseptic or current<\/span> antibiotic such as:<\/p>\n\n- \n
Fusidic acid cream<\/span>\n<\/li>\n- \n
Clindamycin solution<\/span>\n<\/li>\n- Benzoyl peroxide<\/li>\n
- Whitfield ointment<\/span> (3% of salicylic acid, 6% of benzoic acid in petroleum jelly).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Extensive infection can be treated with oral antibiotics, including erythromycin or tetracycline, and generally responds promptly. <\/p>\n
Photodynamic<\/span> Red light therapy (broad band, peak at 635 nm) has also been used to treat patients with erythrasma.<\/p>\n<\/span>Erythrasma prevention<\/span><\/h2>\nReappearance<\/span> erythrasma is common.
