class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Homocystinuria is a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"558\">genetic<\/span>, inherited disorder characterized by high urine and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1430\">serum<\/span> homocysteine concentrations (a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1821\">amino acids<\/span>) People with homocystinuria cannot adequately process the amino acid metathionine, which is necessary for growth and development in children and to maintain nitrogen balance in adults.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCuales-son-los-signos-y-sintomas-de-la-homocistinuria\"><\/span>What are the signs and symptoms of homocystinuria?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Newborns with homocystinuria often appear normal, but signs and symptoms begin to develop in the first year of life, although not all are apparent early on.<\/p>\n<p>The signs and symptoms of homocystinuria can vary widely, and patients may have any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Marfanoid appearance (this refers to the tall, slim build and long limbed appearance reminiscent of Marfan <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"350\">syndrome<\/span>  )<\/li>\n<li>Pectus carinatum or pectus excavatum (the depression of the protrusion of the sternum)<\/li>\n<li>High arched palate with crowding of teeth.<\/li>\n<li>Kyphoscoliosis<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"745\">Ectopic<\/span> lentis (dislocation of the lens)<\/li>\n<li>Myopia<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"975\">Glaucoma<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Mental retardation (with an average IQ of 80, although approximately 30% of patients with homocystinuria have an IQ in the normal range).<\/li>\n<li>Arachnodactyly (long and spider fingers)<\/li>\n<li>Seizures<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1848\">Cerebrovascular<\/span> events<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1771\">Psychiatric<\/span> disorders<\/li>\n<li>Osteoporosis<\/li>\n<li>Child failure to thrive<\/li>\n<li>Increased likelihood of blood clots and deep veins. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"769\">thrombosis<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"47\">Cutaneous<\/span> Signs of homocystinuria include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"139\">Hypopigmentation<\/span> because <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1021\">inhibition<\/span> of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1884\">tyrosinase<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>Fair and slim <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"122\">hair<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>Thin, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1603\">translucent<\/span> skin<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1928\">Hyperhidrosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Dry skin with a tendency to <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"491\">eczema<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>Vitiligo<\/li>\n<li>Flushed cheeks with large pores.<\/li>\n<li> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1349\">Livedo<\/span> reticularis <\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"809\">Atrophic<\/span> scars on arms and id=\"%C2%BFQue-causa-la-homocistinuria\"><\/span>What Causes Homocystinuria?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Homocystinuria is inherited in a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"828\">autosomal<\/span> recessive pattern <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"871\">Mutations<\/span> from CBS, MTHFR, MTR, MTRR and MMASHC <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"775\">genes<\/span> have been implicated<\/p>\n<p>These mutations can lead to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cystathionine beta synthase (CBS) deficiency<\/li>\n<li>5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase deficiency<\/li>\n<li>cobalamin deficiency in coenzyme synthesis<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1525\">enzyme<\/span> abnormalities affecting the conversion of homocysteine include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cyanide-nitroprusside test<\/li>\n<li>Serum and urine amino acid test<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1513\">Plasma<\/span> free methionine levels<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"979\">Ophthalmological<\/span> myopia exam, ectopic lentis<\/li>\n<li>\n<p> Skin <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"24\">biopsy<\/span>  with <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1597\">fibroblasts<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"837\">culture<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>Skeletal x-ray<\/li>\n<li>Liver biopsy with enzyme assay.<\/li>\n<li>MTHFR <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"998\">genotyping<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-se-trata-la-homocistinuria\"><\/span>How is homocystinuria treated?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is no cure for homocystinuria. However, about half of the patients respond to high doses of pyridoxine (B6). Skin <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1521\">pigmentation<\/span> You can go back to normal.<\/p>\n<p>For those who do not respond to pyridoxine, other treatments include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A low-metathionine diet (this includes carrots, beets, chard, tomatoes, spinach, bell peppers, melons, apples, pears, but excludes broccoli, mushrooms, avocados, potatoes, walnuts, tofu, and black or black beans, due to the content of amino acids)<\/li>\n<li>Trimethylglycine (betaine)<\/li>\n<li>Folic acid supplements and addition of cysteine to the diet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many patients with homocystinuria die as young adults from <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1177\">arterial<\/span> and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1178\">venous<\/span> thrombosis.<\/p>\n<\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00bfQu\u00e9 es la homocistinuria?
