The American term is diaper rash. Napkin dermatitis is usually a form of contact dermatitis.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQuien-contrae-la-dermatitis-de-la-servilleta\"><\/span>Who gets napkin dermatitis?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Napkin dermatitis most often affects infants 3 to 15 months of age, especially those using traditional cloth diapers (50%). Is much less <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1676\">predominant<\/span> in babies with modern, breathable, multi-layer disposable diapers.<\/p>\n<p>Napkin dermatitis can also affect older children and adults who are incontinent (incontinence-associated dermatitis).<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCual-es-la-causa-de-la-dermatitis-de-la-servilleta\"><\/span>What is the cause of napkin dermatitis?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Napkin dermatitis follows damage to the normal skin barrier and is primarily a form of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1168\">irritating<\/span> contact dermatitis.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>urine and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"969\">occlusion<\/span> lead to overhydration and skin <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"173\">maceration<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>fecal bile salts and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1526\">enzymes<\/span> breakdown <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"273\">stratum corneum<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1469\">lipids<\/span> and proteins.<\/li>\n<li>A mixture of urine and feces creates ammonium hydroxide, raising <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"890\">pH<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Moist skin is colonized by micro-<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"883\">organisms<\/span>, particularly candida.<\/li>\n<li>Mechanical friction from limb movement can increase discomfort.<\/li>\n<li>Pre-existing skin conditions such as <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"922\">atopic<\/span> dermatitis or seborrheic dermatitis <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1495\">predispose<\/span> a baby to napkin dermatitis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Babies who are breastfed have less <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"578\">incidence<\/span> of napkin dermatitis, since stool in breastfed babies has a lower pH than in formula-fed babies. As babies begin to eat <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1128\">solid<\/span> food, stool frequency and pH begin to increase and napkin dermatitis occurs more frequently.<\/p>\n<p>Other causes of napkin rashes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Candida albicans<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Impetigo<\/li>\n<li>Childish <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"378\">seborrheic<\/span> dermatitis<\/li>\n<li>Atopic <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"491\">eczema<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Psoriasis<\/li>\n<li>Miliaria<\/li>\n<li>Acrodermatitis enteropatica<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>sensitive biotin <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"60\">skin disease<\/span>  <\/li>\n<li>Rare disorders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>  Napkin dermatitis is not due to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1136\">Allergy<\/span> to the napkins<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1922\">Toxins<\/span> on the napkins<\/li>\n<li>Powdered detergents (unless not completely removed by rinsing)<\/li>\n<li>Dermatophyte fungal infections (ringworm).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCuales-son-las-caracteristicas-clinicas-de-la-dermatitis-de-la-servilleta\"><\/span>What are the clinical features of napkin dermatitis?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Napkin dermatitis presents as <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"967\">erythematous<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"343\">macules<\/span> and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"366\">papules<\/span> in the genital area that can spread to involve the lower abdomen and thighs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Irritant napkin dermatitis: well-<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"811\">demarcated<\/span> variable <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"90\">erythema<\/span>, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"201\">edema<\/span>, dryness and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"384\">climbing<\/span>. The caregiver should always wash their hands before and after changing a diaper\/nappy. Napkin dermatitis is much less common with modern disposable napkins than with cloth diapers. <\/p>\n<p>Disposable diapers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They are available in different shapes and sizes depending on age and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1167\">sex<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>It can be selected in a larger size to reduce contact and friction between the napkin and the skin.<\/li>\n<li>Keep skin dry and clean.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain the optimal pH of the skin.<\/li>\n<li>Must be changed when wet or dirty<\/li>\n<li>Contains cellulose pulp and superabsorbent polymers.<\/li>\n<li>May include Vaseline-based hydration <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1120\">lotion<\/span> to support the skin barrier<\/li>\n<li>Fasteners, backsheets and stretch reduce leaks.<\/li>\n<li>are not<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1159\">toxic<\/span> and biologically inert<\/li>\n<li>It does not have <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"409\">Allergens<\/span> such as natural rubber latex or disperse dyes\n<\/li>\n<li>It leads to less household exposure to fecal matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you use cloth diapers, use diaper liners to keep skin dry. Avoid plastic pants.<\/p>\n<p>For napkin changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gently clean baby&#039;s skin with water and a soft cloth.<\/li>\n<li>Wet wipes are convenient but expensive and can cause contact allergy to preservatives used to prevent mold<\/li>\n<li>Aqueous <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1121\">cream<\/span> or other non-soap cleanser can be used if needed<\/li>\n<li>Pat dry gently and let air dry<\/li>\n<li>Apply a protectant <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1887\">emollient<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1122\">ointment<\/span> containing petrolatum and zinc oxide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Otras-sugerencias\"><\/span>Other suggestions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Give fluids early in the evening to reduce wetness at night.<\/li>\n<li>Note whether certain foods are linked to the rash by increasing the acidity of the stool (eg, orange juice) or the frequency.
