There has been more than 50 years of experience with these drugs, which were originally derived from the soil. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"935\">bacteria<\/span> <em>Streptomyces aureofaciens<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The original base drugs, chlortetracycline, tetracycline and oxytetracycline, have been replaced by products that are better and more absorbed. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1154\">lipophilic<\/span>, with excellent fabric <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"69\">distribution<\/span>. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Doxycycline<\/li>\n<li>Lymecycline<\/li>\n<li>Minocycline <\/li>\n<li>Sarecycline<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Doxycycline is the most commonly prescribed tetracycline.<\/p>\n<p>Chemically modified tetracyclines are under development to reduce antibiotic activity and increase their anti-antibiotic activity.<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"490\">inflammatory<\/span> effect.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFPara-que-se-usan-la-tetraciclina-y-sus-derivados\"><\/span>What are tetracycline and its derivatives used for?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Tetracyclines are broad-spectrum antibiotics that are often used to treat infections of the skin, chest, urethra, and pelvis. Doxycycline is indicated for a wide range of infections including syphilis, Lyme disease, Q <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1176\">fever<\/span>, The Rocky Mountains saw fever and plague. It is also widely used for malaria. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1737\">prophylaxis<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>Doxycycline is also effective in controlling inflammatory and non-infectious skin. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1018\">mucous membrane<\/span> diseases, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acne<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Rosacea<span> <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"227\">Newspaper<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"53\">dermatitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Hidradenitis suppurativa\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"805\">Recurrent<\/span> aphthous <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"272\">stomatitis<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"498\">Bullous<\/span> pemphigoid<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1076\">Granulomatous<\/span> disorders such as sarcoidosis\n<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1626\">Pyoderma<\/span> gangrenous<\/li>\n<li>Sweet disease<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"234\">Pityriasis<\/span> Lichenoides Chronica.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is important to note that the use of tetracyclines does not increase <em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em> resistance (see MRSA).<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-funcionan-las-tetraciclinas\"><\/span>How do tetracyclines work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As antibiotics, tetracyclines interfere with the protein synthesis of susceptible bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>They are too <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1413\">anti-inflammatory<\/span> agents<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1022\">inhibit<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1415\">matrix metalloproteinases<\/span> (MMP), hydrolases and phospholipase A2: these <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1526\">enzymes<\/span> are active in <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"52\">dermal<\/span> inflammatory skin disorders.<\/li>\n<li>They reduce the production of pro-inflammatories. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"434\">cytokines<\/span> such as TNF-a, IL-1B and IL-6.<\/li>\n<li>They are antioxidants, reducers <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1688\">free radicals<\/span> production and nitric oxide.<\/li>\n<li>inhibit <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1404\">angiogenesis<\/span> and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"113\">granuloma<\/span> training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCual-es-la-dosis-habitual\"><\/span>What is the usual dose?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The dose of doxycycline antibiotic is 100 mg once or twice a day. It should be taken in an upright position, with plenty of water.  <\/p>\n<p>Lower doses of doxycycline have been shown to be effective in rosacea (20 mg twice daily or 40 mg once daily). The lowest dose of doxycycline available in New Zealand is 50 mg. The effect of low-dose doxycycline on other skin disorders is unknown, and it is quite common for a dose of antibiotic to be prescribed.<\/p>\n<p>A <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1330\">current<\/span> The minocycline foam formulation was approved for use in acne by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2019.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFDurante-cuanto-tiempo-se-toman-las-tetraciclinas\"><\/span>How long are tetracyclines taken?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Infections are treated for 7 to 28 days, depending on the condition being treated.<\/p>\n<p>Inflammatory disorders take several weeks or months to respond to tetracyclines, such as doxycycline. They are often prescribed for months or years for inflammatory skin disorders. They are not curative for these conditions.<\/p>\n<p>There is a lag period of one to three weeks between the dose change and its effect on the skin. If the skin problem worsens, go back to the previous higher dose and continue with it or as directed by your doctor.<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCuales-son-los-efectos-secundarios-y-los-riesgos-de-la-tetraciclina-y-sus-derivados\"><\/span>What are the side effects and risks of tetracycline and its derivatives?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Tetracyclines should not be taken by pregnant or lactating women, or by children under 12 years of age, as they discolor growing teeth and may cause enamel hypoplasia (malformed permanent teeth). Staining of permanent teeth is usually temporary but can persist for long periods. They can also affect the bones.<\/p>\n<p>Doxycycline is generally very well tolerated, particularly at a subantibiotic dose.  <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1136\">Allergy<\/span> It can happen, but it&#039;s rare. There are some important precautions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It should be taken in an upright position and with plenty of water, to reduce <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1804\">esophagitis<\/span>. Wait about an hour before going to bed<\/li>\n<li>Patients should protect the skin and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"193\">nail<\/span> from sun exposure, as it is photosensitizing and can cause unexpected sunburn\n<\/li>\n<li>May cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; better tolerated when taken after a meal than on an empty stomach<\/li>\n<li>prone women <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1003\">vulvovaginal<\/span> candida <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"145\">infection<\/span> (candidiasis) with broad-spectrum antibiotics should consider <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1738\">prophylactic<\/span> intermittent topical treatment <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"380\">systemic<\/span> azole antifungal agent\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Minocycline has a higher risk of serious adverse effects compared to doxycycline, so minocycline is best avoided as a first-line agent. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drug <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"943\">hypersensitivity<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"350\">syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"691\">Autoimmune<\/span> reactions<\/li>\n<li>dizziness and headache<\/li>\n<li>After a long time use, blue <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1521\">pigmentation<\/span> skin and nails\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Minocycline is less likely than doxycycline to cause <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"706\">photosensitivity<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Interacciones-con-la-drogas\"><\/span>Drug interactions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Important drug interactions of tetracycline and its derivatives include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rise risk <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1043\">intracranial<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"561\">hypertension<\/span> with systemic <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"762\">retinoids<\/span> (acitretin, isotretinoin, alitretinoin)<\/li>\n<li>Decreased bioavailability of tetracyclines with iron, aluminum, magnesium, calcium, rifampin, celestipol, and anticonvulsants.\n<\/li>\n<li>Increased <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"896\">renal<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1160\">toxicity<\/span> with diuretics <\/li>\n<li>May increase lithium concentrations, which can lead to toxicity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Efecto-sobre-anticonceptivos\"><\/span>Effect on contraceptives<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There is little evidence that tetracyclines reduce the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"914\">effectiveness<\/span> of the oral contraceptive pill unless they cause gastrointestinal discomfort. However, to be absolutely safe, extra precautions must be taken, particularly in the first four weeks of starting antibiotics. Discuss this with your doctor.<\/p>\n<p>If you develop side effects, let your doctor know.
