\nErythema<\/span> the nodose is the most common form of panniculitis<\/span>. Typically presented as tender, erythematous<\/span>, subcutaneous<\/span> nodules<\/span> and plates<\/span>, which arises in crops most commonly in the pretibial<\/span> areas bilaterally.<\/p>\n<\/span>\nHistology<\/span> of erythema nodosum<\/span><\/h2>\nErythema nodosum histologically<\/span> it represents the prototype of a septal panniculitis. The classic histopathological presentation of erythema nodosum is that of septal panniculitis with a mixture cellular<\/span> infiltrate<\/span> of lymphocytes<\/span>, histiocytes<\/span>, giant cells<\/span>and occasionally eosinophils<\/span> and a characteristic absence of vasculitis<\/span> (Figures 1-3).<\/p>\nMiescher radial granulomas consisting of small nodules composed of spindle to oval-shaped histiocytes arranged around minute grooves are thought to be a relatively specific finding for erythema nodosum (Figure 4).<\/p>\n
Early lesions can be difficult to diagnose based on histopathologic features alone. Sections can display edematous<\/span> septa containing a prominent mixed inflammatory<\/span> infiltrate and minimal fibrosis<\/span>. As the lesions progress, there is neutrophilic<\/span> infiltration<\/span> followed by chronic<\/span> infiltrators<\/span>, granulomas<\/span> and septal fibrosis.<\/p>\nSmall-vessel vasculitis (or venulitis) may be seen in early lesions.<\/p>\n\n<\/span>Pathology of erythema nodosum<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/section>\n\n\n
