often affects young children. It is characterized by blisters on the hands, feet and mouth. It can infrequently affect adults and tends to be more severe in the elderly, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1695\">immunocompromised<\/span>and pregnant women.<\/p>\n<p>Foot and mouth disease is very infectious, so several family members or a school class may be affected. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"720\">Epidemics<\/span> They are most common during the late summer or fall months.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCuales-son-las-caracteristicas-clinicas-de-la-enfermedad-de-manos-pies-y-boca\"><\/span>What are the clinical features of hand, foot, and mouth disease?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Typical causes of HFM:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Injuries to the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"71\">dorsal<\/span> and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"585\">palm<\/span> surfaces of the hands and feet. The progression is from flat pink spots to small elongated grayish blisters and, in a week, they peel off without scarring.<\/li>\n<li>Little <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1028\">vesicles<\/span> and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1279\">ulcers<\/span> in and around the mouth, palate, and pharynx. Sometimes they are painful, so the child eats little and becomes restless.<\/li>\n<li>Red <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"343\">macules<\/span> and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"366\">papules<\/span> on the buttocks and sometimes on the arms. Injuries can also occur on the genitals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1395\">Atypical<\/span> FMD results in one more <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"309\">extended<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"255\">eruption<\/span>. Features may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Red crusted papules<\/li>\n<li>Blistered or very large.<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1623\">Targetoid<\/span> injuries<\/li>\n<li>Involvement of unusual sites such as the ear.<\/li>\n<li>In children with <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"922\">atopic<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"53\">dermatitis<\/span>, lesions can select the skin affected by <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"491\">eczema<\/span> (eczema coxsackium).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Flat pink spots on the dorsal and palmar surfaces of the hands and feet are soon followed by small, elongated grayish blisters. These are resolved by taking off within a week, without leaving scars.<\/p>\n<p>Usually there are also some small oral vesicles and ulcers. Sometimes they are painful, so the child eats little and becomes restless. There may be some on the skin around the mouth. If oral intake is poor due to painful erosions, intravenous fluids may be indicated.<\/li>\n<li>Antiseptic mouthwashes<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">,<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1330\">current<\/span> and oral pain relievers help ease pain due to oral ulcers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Intravenous <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"427\">immunoglobulin<\/span> and milrinone have shown some <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"914\">effectiveness<\/span> in some reports <\/p>\n<p>No vaccines or specific <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1512\">antiviral<\/span> Medications are available.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFEl-nino-tiene-que-quedarse-fuera-de-la-escuela\"><\/span>Does the child have to stay out of school?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As in the vast majority of cases, FMD is a mild illness, it is not necessary to keep children out of school once they are well enough to attend.<\/p>\n<p>The blisters remain infectious until they have dried, which usually occurs within a few days. Stool is infectious for up to a month after illness.
