class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Erysipelas is a superficial form of cellulitis, a potentially serious disease. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"937\">bacterial<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"145\">infection<\/span> affecting the skin.<\/p>\n<p>Erysipelas affects the upper part <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"61\">dermis<\/span> and extends to the superficial <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"47\">cutaneous<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"954\">lymphatic<\/span>. It is also known as the San Antonio fire due to the intense <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"255\">eruption<\/span> associated with it.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQuien-contrae-erisipela\"><\/span>Who gets erysipelas?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Erysipelas most commonly affects infants and the elderly, but it can affect any age group. The risk factors are similar to those for other forms of cellulite. They may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Previous episodes of erysipelas<\/li>\n<li>The skin barrier is broken due to insect bites. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1279\">ulcers<\/span> and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"319\">chronic<\/span> skin conditions such as psoriasis, athlete&#039;s foot, and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"491\">eczema<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>Current or previous injury (eg, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1365\">trauma<\/span>, surgical wounds, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1325\">radiotherapy<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li>In newborns, exposure to <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1259\">umbilical<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1762\">cable<\/span> and injury at the vaccination site<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"874\">Nasopharyngeal<\/span> infection<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1178\">Venous<\/span> disease (eg, gravitational eczema, leg <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1278\">ulceration<\/span>) and lymphedema\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Immunodeficiency or compromise, such as<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Alcoholism<\/li>\n<li>Obesity<\/li>\n<li>Human immunodeficiency virus (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"127\">HIV<\/span>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Nephrotic <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"350\">syndrome<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>The pregnancy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQue-causa-la-erisipela\"><\/span>What Causes Erysipelas?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Unlike cellulite, almost all erysipelas is caused by group A beta <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1524\">hemolytic<\/span> streptococci (Streptococcus pyogenes). Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA), Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Yersinia enterocolitica, and Haemophilus influenzae also rarely cause erysipelas.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCuales-son-las-caracteristicas-clinicas-de-la-erisipela\"><\/span>What are the clinical features of erysipelas?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The symptoms and signs of erysipelas are usually abrupt and often accompanied by fever, chills, and chills.<\/p>\n<p>Erysipelas predominantly affects the skin of the lower extremities, but when it affects the face, it may have a characteristic butterfly <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"69\">distribution<\/span> on the cheeks and across the bridge of the nose.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The affected skin has a very sharp and raised edge.<\/li>\n<li>It is bright red, firm and swollen.
