It affects up to half of all full-term newborns, but is less common in premature newborns. Not known <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1167\">sex<\/span> or racial <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1227\">predilection<\/span>Although it has been suggested that it may be poorly recognized in babies with darker skin types.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Caracteristicas-clinicas-del-eritema-toxico-del-recien-nacido\"><\/span>Clinical characteristics of toxic erythema of the newborn.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Most cases of toxic erythema in the newborn begin in the first days after birth, although the onset may be up to two weeks of age.<\/p>\n<p>Newborn toxic erythema is evident as various combinations of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"967\">erythematous<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"343\">macules<\/span> (flat red patches) <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"366\">papules<\/span> (small bumps) and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1016\">pustules<\/span>. the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"704\">eruption<\/span> typically increases and decreases over several days and is unusual for an individual <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"164\">injury<\/span> persist for more than a day.<\/p>\n<p>Newborn toxic erythema often begins on the face and spreads to affect the trunk and extremities. Several theories have been proposed including that it is a reaction to mechanical and thermal stimuli (heat), an &quot;allergic&quot; reaction, or a mild form of graft vs <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1313\">host<\/span> disease.<\/p>\n<p>Although the toxic erythema of the newborn is benign and does not require treatment, several differential diagnoses should be considered. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infections (folliculitis, impetigo, listeriosis, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1036\">congenital<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"47\">cutaneous<\/span> candidiasis, herpes simplex, chickenpox, and cytomegalovirus)<\/li>\n<li>Transient <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1195\">neonatal<\/span> pustular melanosis<\/li>\n<li>Infantile acropustulosis<\/li>\n<li>Miliaria rubra<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Eosinophilic <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1130\">pustulosis<\/span> (Childish Ofuji <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"350\">syndrome<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li>Incontinentia pigmenti<\/li>\n<li>Omenn syndrome<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Self-healing <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1346\">histiocytosis<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are generally recognized by clinical features, although in some cases the diagnosis may be aided by a Tzanck smear or skin biopsy.<\/p>\n<\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is toxic erythema of the newborn?
