Other macrolide antibiotics include azithromycin, clarithromycin, roxithromycin.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFPara-que-se-usa-la-eritromicina\"><\/span>What is erythromycin used for?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Erythromycin is prescribed by dermatologists for a variety of skin conditions, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acne<\/li>\n<li>Rosacea<\/li>\n<li>Erythrasma<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"234\">Pityriasis<\/span> lichenoids<\/li>\n<li>Infections such as impetigo or boils.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Erythromycin is particularly useful in individuals allergic to penicillin and in children who are too young for a tetracycline.<\/p>\n<p>It is active against many gram-positive ones. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"883\">organisms<\/span> (even <em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em>, <em>Streptococcus pyogenes<\/em>, corynebacteria and clostridia) and some gram-negative organisms (<em>Neisseria gonorrhoeae<\/em>, the cause of gonorrhea). It is also effective for mycoplasma, syphilis, and chlamydia infections.<\/p>\n<p>Growing <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"937\">bacterial<\/span> Erythromycin resistance is reported. Long-term use of erythromycin has been questioned in <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"55\">dermatology<\/span> because it can lead to bacterial resistance to <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"586\">pathogen<\/span>, <em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em> (See MRSA), as well as acne resistance <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"935\">bacteria<\/span> (<em>Cutibacterium acnes<\/em>)<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-funciona-la-eritromicina-en-las-enfermedades-de-la-piel\"><\/span>How does erythromycin work in skin diseases?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Erythromycin has bacteriostatic effects and prevents <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"893\">proliferation<\/span> bacteria<\/li>\n<li>Inhibits the pro-<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"490\">inflammatory<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"434\">cytokines<\/span> as IL-8 and decreases <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"441\">neutrophils<\/span> oxidative explosions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-se-toma-la-eritromicina\"><\/span>How is erythromycin taken?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Oral erythromycin is best taken on an empty stomach or just before meals. It comes in a number of bases and formulations.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Base compound<\/li>\n<li>Salt stolate<\/li>\n<li>Ethyl succinate salt<\/li>\n<li>Stearate salt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also available as <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1330\">current<\/span> acne prep.To reduce antibiotic resistance, a non-antibiotic compound such as benzoyl peroxide or a topical <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"761\">retinoid<\/span> should be applied when topical erythromycin is used.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCuales-son-los-efectos-secundarios-de-la-eritromicina\"><\/span>What are the side effects of erythromycin?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Erythromycin is generally well tolerated. When essential, erythromycin can be used in pregnancy and during lactation.<\/p>\n<p>The following side effects can arise.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, loss of appetite.<\/li>\n<li>Hepatic reactions: more common in people with pre-existing and potentially serious liver disease. The signs are dark urine, light stools, yellow eyes and skin (<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"732\">jaundice<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li>Allergic rashes: urticaria, fixed drug <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"704\">eruption<\/span>Stevens-Johnson\u2013<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1159\">toxic<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"846\">epidermal<\/span> necrolysis and rarely, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"440\">anaphylaxis<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>Hearing loss - more likely with high doses in people with kidney disease<\/li>\n<li>Potentially deadly <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1134\">arrhythmias<\/span> (irregularities of the heartbeat) have been reported in people with <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1253\">dysfunction<\/span> that results in a prolonged QT interval on the electrocardiograph (ECG). This may be due to <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1036\">congenital<\/span> or acquired heart conditions or electrolyte disturbances (low levels of potassium or magnesium)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Interacciones-farmacologicas-con-eritromicina\"><\/span>Drug interactions with erythromycin<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Erythromycin has significant interactions with other medications. Tell your doctor the names of all the medications you are taking, whether prescription or over-the-counter.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Erythromycin should not be taken with terfenadine, astemizole, or cisapride because it could cause dangerous irregularities in the heartbeat and sudden death. These drugs are no longer available in New Zealand.<\/li>\n<li>Other medications that can prolong the QT interval include amiodarone, risperidone, haloperidol, citalopram, and ciprofloxacin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Erythromycin can increase the concentration of the following medications, resulting in potentially toxic levels.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Warfarin (additional blood tests are needed for prothrombin time)<\/li>\n<li>Statins, particularly simvastatin and atorvastatin. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1160\">Toxicity<\/span> causes muscle pain and weakness, which can be serious. If long-term treatment with a statin and erythromycin is required, suitable alternatives are fluvastatin, pravastatin, and rosuvastatin.<\/li>\n<li>Caffeine<\/li>\n<li>Theophylline <\/li>\n<li>Carbamazepine <\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Cyclosporine <\/li>\n<li>Ergotamine (increases <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1374\">peripheral<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"153\">ischemia<\/span>)  <\/li>\n<li>Digoxin <\/li>\n<li>Triazolam  <\/li>\n<li>Midazolam  <\/li>\n<li>Alfentanil <\/li>\n<li>Pimozide <\/li>\n<li>Bromocryptin <\/li>\n<li>Disopyramide <\/li>\n<li>Phenytoin  <\/li>\n<li>Valproate  <\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Tacrolimus <\/li>\n<li>Quinidine <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"grey-box\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 0.9em;\">New Zealand approved data sheets are the official source of information for these prescription drugs, including approved uses and risk information.
