class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Food allergy is a <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"464\">immune <\/span>reaction to a dietary protein that is immediate (occurs seconds to minutes after eating or touching food) or delayed (occurs hours or days later). <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1336\">Allergic reactions<\/span> It can occur when the affected person eats or touches a small amount of the responsible protein.<\/p>\n<p>Food allergy is most common in young babies (4%), which often outgrow <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1137\">allergies<\/span>. About 2% of adults also suffer from allergies to one or more foods. The tendency to food allergy runs in families.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alergia-alimentaria-y-la-piel\"><\/span>Food allergy and skin<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Skin conditions due to food allergy include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some cases of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"440\">anaphylaxis<\/span>: severe reaction with <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"293\">urticarial<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"255\">eruption<\/span>, shortness of breath and circulatory collapse.<\/li>\n<li>Some cases of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"349\">acute<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1646\">urticaria<\/span>- A hive reaction that occurs shortly after eating the responsible food.<\/li>\n<li>Some cases of contact urticaria: swelling and redness confined to the area that the food touches.<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1018\">Mucous membrane<\/span> Contact urticaria: short-term irritation and swelling confined to mucosal surfaces, particularly the mouth and lips.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Oral allergy <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"350\">syndrome<\/span>: Symptoms are triggered by eating specific raw foods in people with certain pollen allergies<\/li>\n<li>Tick bite induced red meat allergy<\/li>\n<li>Some cases of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"922\">atopic<\/span> <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"491\">eczema<\/span>: <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1566\">exacerbations<\/span> of eczema after eating certain foods.<\/li>\n<li>Some cases of allergic contact. <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"53\">dermatitis<\/span>: Touching a food such as fig produces dermatitis in areas in contact with it.<\/li>\n<li>Some cases of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1724\">photoallergic<\/span> Contact dermatitis: touching a food causes dermatitis in areas in contact with it and then it is exposed to the sun.<\/li>\n<li>Protein Contact Dermatitis: Contact urticaria followed by dermatitis.<\/li>\n<li>Some aphthous <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1279\">ulcers<\/span>for example, due to allergy to chocolate or mint<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Dermatitis herpetiformis (gluten) - sneezing, running \/ itchy eyes<\/li>\n<li>Asthma - wheezing, shortness of breath, cough<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gastrointestinal allergy<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nausea and vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Heartburn, reflux<\/li>\n<li>Colic, cramps, diarrhea, constipation.<\/li>\n<li>Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Circulatory allergy<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Anaphylaxis: low blood pressure, shock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQue-alimentos-causan-reacciones-alergicas\"><\/span>What foods cause allergic reactions?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>About 90% of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"380\">systemic<\/span> Allergic reactions are due to the following foods:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Egg<\/li>\n<li>Milk<\/li>\n<li>Peanut<\/li>\n<li>Soy<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1237\">Fish<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Seafood<\/li>\n<li>Wheat<\/li>\n<li>Tree nuts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are numerous other foods and plants that occasionally cause allergies. Some are listed here.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seeds and nuts such as cashew\n<\/li>\n<li>Fruits, including figs, kiwis, chestnuts, lemon, lime, and mango.\n<\/li>\n<li>Corn and maize<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Garlic, leek and onion\n<\/li>\n<li>Vegetables, including artichokes, asparagus, celery, lettuce, parsnip\n<\/li>\n<li>Legumes (chickpeas, beans, peas, lentils)<\/li>\n<li>Herbs like mint, parsley, chives\n<\/li>\n<li>Spices such as Peruvian balsam and vanilla.<\/li>\n<li>Red meat (in <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">tick bite induced red meat <\/span><span class=\"term tooltipstered\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-term-id=\"1136\">allergy<\/span>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An allergy can also be triggered by preservatives like parabens and flavoring agents or fragrances added to food.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo-se-diagnostica-la-alergia-alimentaria\"><\/span>How is a food allergy diagnosed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A food allergy is diagnosed by taking a careful history of symptoms and their relationship to food, supported by examination results and test results. Unfortunately, neither the history nor the tests are completely reliable at all.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A false positive means that the test was positive, but the patient is not allergic to the test substance.<\/li>\n<li>A false negative means that the test was negative, but the patient is allergic to the test substance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The main food allergy tests are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Puncture tests<\/li>\n<li>IgE-specific blood tests (RAST)<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"224\">Patch<\/span> tests, in some cases dermatitis<\/li>\n<li>Skin <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"24\">biopsy<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Antigliadin \/ antiendomysial blood test for gluten sensitivity \/ celiac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"square-placement-country-holder\" class=\"country-dependent advert\">\n<div class=\"box-placement square-placement\">\n<div class=\"advert__frame\">\n<div id=\"dermnet-dermnet-mobbox\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Intolerancia-a-la-comida\"><\/span>Food intolerance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Not all reactions to food are allergic in origin. Intolerance can cause allergy-like symptoms, such as hives and dermatitis. But the reaction often depends on how much is consumed. These reactions are classified as follows.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allergy-like intolerance, that is, symptoms constantly arise from a specific food, but the tests are negative. Symptoms are often due to the FOD-MAP sugars in various foods. <\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1690\">Phototoxic<\/span> contact dermatitis to a plant such as lime or parsley.<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1443\">Irritants<\/span>, as <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1168\">irritating<\/span> hand dermatitis due to handling of vegetables and fruits; acid compound bite.<\/li>\n<li>Chemical intolerance, such as salicylate- and amine-induced urticaria.<\/li>\n<li>Food <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1922\">toxins<\/span>, as <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"90\">erythema<\/span> in scombroid fish poisoning.<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1525\">Enzyme<\/span> deficiency, such as alcohol-induced porphyria cutaneous, alcohol redness.<\/li>\n<li>Excessive <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"406\">ingestion<\/span>, as <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"965\">carotenamia<\/span> by excessive intake of yellow or red foods.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Heavy metal <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1160\">toxicity<\/span> of contaminants in food, such as mercury found in long-lived fish.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Deficiencias-alimentarias\"><\/span>Food deficiencies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Skin conditions can also be due to dietary deficiencies, sometimes due to attempts to reduce exposure to the known or suspected <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"409\">Allergens<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Protein \/ calorie malnutrition: kwashiorkor\n<\/li>\n<li>Vitamin B deficiency: <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/doctorhoogstra.com\/en\/wiki\/pellagra\/\" title=\"pellagra\"><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/doctorhoogstra.com\/en\/wiki\/pellagra\/\" title=\"pellagra\">pellagra<\/a><\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>Vitamin C deficiency: scurvy\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>vitamin D deficiency<\/li>\n<li>Zinc deficiency: acrodermatitis enteropathica\n<\/li>\n<li>Lack of iron<\/li>\n<li>Biotin deficiency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCual-es-el-tratamiento-para-la-alergia-alimentaria\"><\/span>What is the treatment for a food allergy?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The basis of management is to identify which foods are responsible for the reactions and then avoid them. Prescribed treatments depend on the symptoms and may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Epinephrine injections for emergencies in case of anaphylaxis.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Antihistamines for urticaria and rhinitis.<\/li>\n<li>\n<span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1330\">Current<\/span> steroids for eczema\n<\/li>\n<li>Nasal sprays for rhinitis and inhalers for asthma<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Dapsone for dermatitis herpetiformis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Prevencion-de-alergia-alimentaria\"><\/span>Food allergy prevention.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It is not known how to prevent all food allergies. Recommendations regarding the introduction of peanuts to baby food have recently changed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Children with mild to moderate eczema should have peanuts introduced around six months of age.<\/li>\n<li>Children with severe eczema, egg allergy, or both should be tested for peanut allergy, followed by introduction of peanuts at 4\u20136 months of age, based on these results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Que es una comida alergia?
