They present with erythema, cyanosis, <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"201\">edema<\/span>blisters and <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1278\">ulceration<\/span>. Lesions usually heal within several weeks, provided there is no further significant cold exposure. Severe pernio may be the presentation <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"899\">sign<\/span> of <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"43\">connective tissue<\/span> illness, especially <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"380\">systemic<\/span> lupus erythematosus (sable lupus) or systemic <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"260\">sclerosis<\/span>. However, they are also an occupational hazard for dairy farmers, fishermen and other outdoor workers.<\/p>\n<p>Severe cold injuries can damage small bones in the <span class=\"term\" data-term-id=\"1268\">digits<\/span>, which leads to microgeodic disease, swelling and sometimes bone fracture.<\/p>\n<p>Preventing chilblains requires keeping fingers and ears warm and dry.
