Liposarcoma pathology

Liposarcoma is the most common. evil one Soft fabric sarcoma. These are typically deep tumors found on the skin /subcutis by direct invasion. Rare dermal and subcutaneous Tumors have also been described.

Histology liposarcoma

Liposarcoma are fat-producing tumors that have a spectrum of morphologies.

Well-differentiated Liposarcoma shows lipoma-like characteristics, with a normal-looking mixture adipocytes interspersed with atypical adipocytes (Figures 1, 2). Atypical cells are hyperchromatic, pleomorphic and irregular In addition, lipoblasts are commonly found, they have a multivacuolate cytoplasm in which the vacuoles dent the atypical core (Figures 3, 4). There is a well-differentiated and less common liposarcoma, which includes a sclerosing variant (Figure 5).

Pleomorphic liposarcoma can be difficult to recognize as having lipomatous origin (Figures 6, 7). These are made up of frankly atypical mesenchymal cells, often with numerous mitosis and necrosis.

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma is defined as a well-differentiated liposarcoma with dedifferentiation in a sarcoma with a different morphology. In these cases, finding the well-differentiated areas is essential for the diagnosis.

Myxoid liposarcoma is a very characteristic tumor composed of abundant mucin statement and a plexiform capillary net.

Special studies for liposarcoma.

Immunohistochemistry for MDM2 and, to a lesser extent, CDK2 are positive in liposarcoma. Molecular techniques (generally FISH or PCR) are also widely used.

Differential diagnosis liposarcoma

Lipoma: Well-differentiated liposarcoma can be extremely mild. Lipoblast, mitosis, and helper studies for MDM2 and CDK2 can be very helpful. It must be remembered that primary Superficial dermal / subcutaneous liposarcoma is very rare.

Silicone: deposition of silicone, from a breast implant or soft tissue increaseshows vacuolated histiocytes which mimic lipoblasts.

Other sarcomas - Identification of fats differentiation It is useful to distinguish liposarcoma from other sarcomas. Extensive cuts of undifferentiated sarcomas are recommended to exclude focal areas of lipomatous differentiation. Molecular studies of MDM2 are useful diagnostic complements.
