Clinical picture
Ectropion is an alteration in the position of the eyelids in which it everts and moves away from the eyeball, in such a way that the inner surface (conjunctiva) is exposed. In most patients, ectropion occurs on the lower eyelid.
Symptoms
Dry and painful eye, tearing, redness of the eyelid, conjunctivitis.
Causes
It occurs in elderly patients, due to a weakness of the myoneural plate of the orbicularis oculi muscle.
It is also seen very frequently in eyelid surgeries that dry out the skin and approach the adipose bags through the orbicularis oculi muscle.
Other causes are facial paralysis, burn sequelae, etc.
Complications
If ectropion is not resolved in time, corneal ulcers and eye infections can occur, both of which can affect vision.
Prevention
Perform aesthetic surgeries that do not cause damage to the orbicularis oculi muscle and, if possible, do not dry out the skin of the eyelid.
Treatment
An ophthalmological assessment by a lacrimal duct specialist is recommended to determine their status prior to surgery. In some cases, lacrimal duct intubation with silicone stents may be necessary.
These procedures are performed under local anesthesia and sedation, so the patient can go home that same day. The duration of the procedure is approximately 30 minutes. The stitches are usually removed between 10 and 14 days after surgery. The first 48 to 72 hours there is usually edema and hematoma in the periocular region that improves with local cold and rest.
