Origin: Central Asia.
Description: The garlic bulb is made up of a group of small bulbs (cloves). The flowers are held in an umbel.

Applications: Food. Garlic has a long history of use as a complementary medicine to protect against coughs and colds. It is commonly used as a poultice when it can cause very unpleasant burns. Traditionally also a vampire repellent!
Allergens: Diallyl disulfide, allicin.
Allergy: Probably the most common cause of allergic contact. dermatitis at the tips of the fingers. It most often affects the tips of the thumb, index and middle fingers of the non-dominant hand when holding a garlic clove. Inhalation Garlic powder can cause severe asthma. Garlic poultices can cause significant burns (probably irritating)
Cross reactions: Onion, leek, chives.

Patch test: 50% garlic in arachis oil, diallyl disulfide 5%.
