Botryomycosis pathology

Introduction

Botryomycosisbacterial pseudomycosis) is rare chronic bacterial infection of skin caused by colonization masses bacteria. Staphylococcus aureus is the usual cause, but a wide range of gram-negative organisms They have also been isolated.

Histology of botryomycosis

Histopathological examination of botryomycosis shows marked inflammatory response, scarring, and suppuration. Trans-epidermal removal, and marking epithelial hyperplasia sometimes it can also be seen (figure 1).

Botryomycosis resembles mycetoma with granules present inside suppurative inflammation. The granules are composed of blue-tinged bacteria surrounded by intense eosinophilic shelter (the Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon, figure 2).

Gram staining will detect bacterial forms of botryomcyosis. PAS stains the granule.

Differential diagnosis of botryomycosis pathology

Mycetoma: Unlike mycetoma, botryomycosis is not caused by fungi or actinomycosis.

Disseminated infections: a spread infection will have diffuse Invasion pattern without localized granules.

Scaly cell carcinoma - A massive epidermal reaction (figure 1) can be confused with a invader carcinoma, particularly if only the surface of a injury biopsied
