Pathology of gnatostomiasis

Introduction

Human gnatostomiasis occurs as deep larva migrans and is caused by ingestion of gnathostoma larvae. It is characterized by cutaneous migratory swellings. The larvae are ingested through raw fish in warmer climates in South America and parts of Asia.

Histology of gnatostomiasis

Histopathology of gnatostomiasis shows a diffuse inflammatory cell infiltration at dermis with eosinophils and denatured collagen fragments (Figures 1–4). Parts of parasites can be seen.

Differential diagnosis for gnatostomiasis

The diagnosis of gnatostomiasis is difficult without clinical correlation. The reaction pattern is identical to that seen in an exaggerated bite reaction or reaction to a variety of parasites. Identification of parasitic parts can also be difficult to define as gnatostomiasis in routine hematoxylin and eosin sections.
