Marginal keratoelastoidosis pathology

What is marginal keratoelastoidosis?

Marginal keratoelastoidosis presents as symmetric, hyperkeratotic, linear plates along the side aspects of the hands. Otherwise, it has been reported as digital papular calcifying elastosis of the hands and degenerative collagen plates of the hands.

Histology from marginal keratoelastoidosis

Histological findings in marginal keratoelastoidosis include epidermal acanthosis with some loss of challenge pattern associated with overlap hyperkeratosis (Figure 1). There are thick acellular collagen packages in the dermis (Figure 2). In addition, there are fragmented degenerative elastics that can form elastotic masses. These masses sometimes calcify (Figure 3).

Special studies for marginal keratoelastoidosis.

Elastic spots will show a reduction of elastic fibers. Residual elastic fibers are disorganized or can form clumps.

Differential diagnosis from marginal keratoelastoidosis pathology

Dermal elastosis - dense fibroplasia and the clinical features help distinguish this disorder from regular cutaneous elastosis.
