Stretch marks

Stretch marks are skin atrophies in the form of whitish lines located in the connective tissue. They appear when the skin is stretched or gives much of itself due to rapid growth.

Clinical picture

Despite the fact that the skin is usually elastic, when it is stretched excessively, the normal production of collagen (the main protein in charge of manufacturing the connective tissue of the skin) is altered. Consequently, fine scars called stretch marks can form.

Types of stretch marks

There are two types of stretch marks:
• Bloating stretch marks: they are seen in pregnant women, in patients who have lost weight drastically.
• Purple or dark purple or purple streaks that are a characteristic sign of Cushing's syndrome due to excessive production of cortisol (hypercortisolism). They can also be created by prolonged consumption of pharmaceutical corticosteroids.

 Causes

From a physiological point of view, stretch marks are caused by stretching of the middle and inner layers of the skin due to pregnancy, puberty and rapid growth, or also by sudden increase or decrease in weight.

Stretch marks can also appear when a person uses steroid-containing skin creams or lotions, or has to take high doses of corticosteroids for prolonged periods.

Preventive treatments

What are Fordyce beans?

Fordyce spots or pimples are white spots of about 1 to 3 mm that may appear on the lips, penis, scrotum, or vulva. These beans are technically ectopic sebaceous glands They increase in size and, therefore, can arise at any age, being more frequent at puberty due to hormonal changes. It is not related to HIV, herpes, sexually transmitted diseases, genital warts, or cancer.

What do they look like?

Clinically they appear as multiple papules of 2 to 3 mm in diameter (“pimples”), yellowish-whitish in color, bilateral, and slightly raised.

Where do they appear?

Fordyce pimples in the mouth usually appear on the upper lip, inside the cheek, or on the gums. In the genital region, mainly in men, the appearance of Fordyce granules in the body of the penis, glans, foreskin or testicles is common.
